Introducing allergens - what to do if mind signs of allergy

We have a history of allergies to dairy and eggs in our family with asthma too.

We tried 7 month DD with some yoghurt a few days ago and she got a little red patch around her mouth / under her chin with 2/3 raised dots on. This was her only symptom, no stomach troubles, coughing, wheezing etc.

She has occasionally had that reaction when breastfeeding too and also a bit of dribble rash. I eat dairy but she’s never had green poos or any of the other symptoms associated with cows milk allergy.

My question is what do we do next? It looks like she could be allergic to it, so do we try again and see for definite or cut it out?

The NHS website is a bit useless as it just shows you signs of an allergy but doesn’t say what to do next. Should we keep offering it if it looks just like a mild allergy like this? Thanks

I would say use the dairy ladder (google it

  • the six step one will be fine) to introduce dairy and stop if you get a reaction eg at yoghurt.

CMPA can be missed until weaning in bf babies so you're right to be cautious.

There's an egg ladder too, so I would use that also, but introduce one at a time.

Make sure you have Piriton in the house in case of a reaction that needs treatment (ef swelling or lots of hives). They sell it for over 12 months but the dose is the same under that age - one 2.5ml dose. We had it prescribed from 6 months.

If you do get a reaction make sure you take photographs and then go to see the GP about a referral to the allergy team and a dietician. You'll then get annual skin prick testing to test how the body is responding (eg outgrowing them) and also dietician support on elimination of allergens and how to make sure they are properly substituted (calcium intake etc)
