Baby breakfast ideas - dairy free

My 5.5month old is being tested for dairy allergy, but not until next month when he will be 6.5 months.

We have just started weaning on doctors advice, and he’s only on veg or fruit at the moment.
In the next few weeks though I will start on more of a breakfast.

Can he already have things like oat milk at 6+ months in food? He is breastfed and I don’t express so haven’t a dairy free formula alternative. Or should I just give him toast/ eggs/ fruit/ veg until he’s been tested?

Sainsbury's pikelets (not crumpets) are dairy free and my son really likes them for breakfast

BumbleNova · 15/10/2020 12:31

I think alternative milks are fine in food. We used almond.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 15/10/2020 18:34

Oat milk and coconut milk are Ok. Definitely not rice or soya. Be sparing with nut milks.

Also, try overnight oats with plain oatly yogurt www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/305955549 and fruit purée

I believe they have butter in them, so not dairy free www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/all-breakfast-bakery/sainsburys-pikelets-x6 and way too much salt for a 5 month baby

I'm having this problem. Was giving DD mashed fruit but was worried about too much sweetness. Ended up buying dairy free ellas kitchen yogurt and porridge pouches which she loves, but now worried as didn't want to rely on pouches! I've ordered dairy free formula so I can try normal porridge next week. Too scared to try toast as worried about choking

nogooddeedgoesunpunished · 16/10/2020 02:52

Can they eat egg? My DS is dairy free and has egg mashed with banana and fried like a pancake. Loves it

Fivemoreminutes1 · 16/10/2020 07:24

Blend 1 weetabix with half a banana/a spoon of raisins/a ripe pear and a dollop or oat-based yogurt. Soon you’ll be able to add a teaspoon of nut butter too.

Family1st2020 · 16/10/2020 10:13

@polkadotpixie they're not dairy free. They say cows milk in them.? Or is there a free from version?

AriettyHomily · 16/10/2020 10:15

Ready brek or porridge with water?

ForeverBubblegum · 16/10/2020 10:24

Would you be comfortable with finger food? (Maybe in a couple of weeks when 6 months). Mine have toast fingers and some cut up fruit for breakfast, and have since weaning. Obviously you would be restricted on topping, but you can get dairy free 'butter'/spread, mine like cream cheese so maybe some kind of cheese alternative (look in vegan foods section) or peanut butter (depending on allergy risk)

polkadotpixie · 16/10/2020 11:14

@LeGrandBleu & @Family1st2020 They must have changed the recipe because these are one of the things my niece (severely, life-threateningly allergic to milk) used to eat when she was weaning and I used to buy them for my son when he was waiting for testing

I'm not bothered about salt and sugar content though so never checked that

polkadotpixie · 16/10/2020 11:19

Oops, just realised I wrote it the wrong way round 😩 It's Sainsbury's crumpets that are dairy free and pikelets that aren't (I blame my Dad because he calls crumpets pikelets)

FluffMagnet · 16/10/2020 11:42

Porridge made with water? Add fruit for flavour and additional nutrients. Quick oats (like Flahavans) come out a smoother texture than "proper" porridge.

Caspianberg · 18/10/2020 10:36

Thank you all so much.

I assume we can try egg next week when he is 6 months, they didn’t say to avoid egg, just dairy. I was going to try maybe plain scrambled egg.

Happy to do fingerfood. The last few days I have been trying him with a few spoons of purée veg and giving him the same in solid version to hold. Like sweet potato purée and then a wedge of sweet potato

Just bought some regular fine oats so making with water or oat milk then adding fruit purée could work nicely.

We should have results by the time he is 7months so might only be a month of restrictions hopefully or a better idea of what exactly to restrict and hopefully some guidance from paediatrician. My standard breakfast is Greek yogurt with stuff so it’s hard to think outside the box

I'd check with GP about egg. My DD has CMPA and I was told not to give egg until 12 months 😬
