Nearly 9 month old still not happy with lumps/finger food - normal?

We tried DD with some finger foods around 7 months (HV said to try a little sandwhich/toast etc) she gagged and was really sick so I guess part of me is reluctant to give it another go.

She is still spitting out lumps in her food (I am still mostly pureeing but am going to try moving on to mashing). She has got 3 teeth so should be ok chewing but I am just not sure she is ready.

Are most 9 month olds muching though sandwhiches and carrot sticks?

why thank you...

a lot of babies won't entertain the idea of lumpy food cos they can't work out whether to suck or chew but will easily eat finger foods cos that's obvious you have to chew it.

oh and also i found when ds gagged to be really smiley and confident and do chewing action with my mouth helped.

OK, think i said earlier that DS will not tolerate lumps .... i have tried to make it with some texture and he refuses.. do i give in and give in smooth yoghurt pudding or just stand my ground and do not give him anything else if he refuses lumps?

He will eat rice cakes/biscuits/bread etc but nothing with lumps off a spoon!

kathryn77 · 18/10/2007 22:49

also,he does not gag with lumps, literally sucks and then spits any lumps out!

nappyaddict · 18/10/2007 22:51

have you tried giving him lumpy stuff to feed himself with? so just dumping it on his high chair tray and leaving him to get on with it?

kathryn77 · 18/10/2007 22:54

yep he gets a bowl and spoon, i have a spoon too!

meal times are a nightmare ...

nappyaddict · 18/10/2007 22:58

no i mean without a spoon. so just uses his hands. if he feels it before it goes in his mouth he might realise he has to chew it and not suck it.

ds has only ever eaten food this way. he won't entertain the idea of a bowl or spoon. it ends up straight on the floor. the few times i have tried spoon feeding him it has been knocked out of my hand and all over me!! it's not even that messy tbh. he does throw some stuff on the floor but we have a plastic mat under the high chair that just gets shaken outside and a quick wipeover. and he wears one of those long sleeved bibs so that just gets thrown in the washing machine and then all he needs is a quick wipe of the face and we're good to go. a lot of people think this way is really messy but i don't think it is really.
