May starting weaning in a few weeks and wanted to see what everyone uses and why.

Hope this question isn't too controversial like asking about formula.

You'll probably get people saying 'don't bother cos it tastes like wallpaper paste' and the like (which it does )

Have to admit I gave my dd baby rice but not for very long and I can't remember what make it was! Sorry I'm not very helpful!

SharpMolarBear · 09/10/2007 17:12

didn't you get sachets in your Bounty pack? Could start with them to see if your LO likes it

Lulumama · 09/10/2007 17:12

erm, none, it all tastes like wallpaper paste !!

if you are waiting until 26 weeks, you can try baby led weaning.. no puree, no mush, just finger food

if you are going down the puree route... then i;d rather start with something like pear or sweet potato mush rather than paste!

dissle · 09/10/2007 17:13

I bought some from Boots, have to say that i didnt use much of it as i started pretty quickly with my own stewed fresh stuff.
Cant remember if it was Boots own or a particular make.
It is a good starting point because its so bland you can add all sorts to it to make it taste nice.
Good luck, its a very exciting next step for your lo.

peggotty · 09/10/2007 17:17

Ha! Thought Baby led weaning might get a mention too. I thank you Lulumama!!

Lulumama · 09/10/2007 17:19

well, it has to be said really doesn't it ! i thought i;d save anyone else the effort

IIRC, and it was a while ago, hipp did an organic one

possetwiper · 09/10/2007 17:46

organix do one but as lulu says step away from the puree you know you can

Elsbells · 09/10/2007 19:46

that is where my confusion lies
DS (now 2) was started on purees etc...now that I have become a "proper MN-er" i have just found out about BLW. I have read a blog about it (think Andiem?) but still don't quite understand it.

TBH, it would be great to get DD on the same "mealtimes" as DS so not sure if giving finger food whenever wherever would work for us.

OP posts:
LaDiDaDi · 09/10/2007 19:51

It would work just fine.

Give your dd the same as your ds is having, messy but fun. You may want to modify how you do your veg eg finger shapes rather than rounds for carrots.

BLW is muach more sociaable than purees imo.

Piffle · 09/10/2007 19:51

I am doing BLw 95% of the time with ds2 he is nearly 7 mths, he does like baby rice sometimes with mashed fruit, if we're pushed for time and he is really hungry
The least manky one is the organix wholegrain one I think
You can also make your own did you know

melpomene · 09/10/2007 19:52

If you want to give rice you don't have to use 'baby rice'; you can just use normal rice. I weaned my dds onto pudding rice, well boiled, then pureed/mashed with milk. If you go that route, you can adjust the consistency to suit your baby too.

hobie1 · 09/10/2007 19:54

My LO tolerates Cow & Gate baby rice (which is all I could get hold of living in the middle of Wales!) but would be much happier if she could exist on a diet of mashed banana and little else.

In an effort to broaden her horizons I tried purees (sweet potato, parsnip, carrot, etc) which went down badly - i.e. they came straight back up again! Someone suggested BLW to me, and once I'd worked out what the acronym stood for we tried it. So far, it seems a hit and DD enjoys tucking into all sorts. Yes, loads ends up on the floor but get a dog and that sorts out the mess.

Have fun!

Elsbells · 09/10/2007 20:05

I waited till DS was nearly 9 months or so before food got lumpier, would it be ok for DD??? Again sorry my last experience was straight from the book.

So if DS is given spag bol I just give DD the same just mashed (not puree'd?) Or is just pieces of fruit/veg to start (steamed?)

Pudding rice sounds interesting (and prob tastier!) going to give that one a try.

Habbibu · 09/10/2007 20:16

You'd be surprised what they can handle at 6 months + - by 9 months my daughter was hoovering up exactly what I was eating...

possetwiper · 09/10/2007 20:43

elsbells I think your lo is june so not ready for blw until 6mths if you want to wean now then you would have to use purees

Piffle · 09/10/2007 22:48

Right ds2 is 7 mths in 2 weeks time
He eats
toast with marmite and butter . crusts on
shreddies/rie krispies/bits of my muesli
whole banana, he eats as much as he needs

cheese sandwiches
ok I spoon feed him yoghurt but he controls my hand and tells me when I cna put the spoon in
He chews with his gums (he got his first teeth last week or two)
Last night he ate peas, carrots and mince out of my spag bol and the pasta. he just gummed it and ate it
He can eats biscuits, rice cakes too, if he gets a big lump he spits it out and tries it again...
Honestly ds2 was going to wait til 26 weeks... until he grabed his sisters bowl of rice krispies and stuffed a handful in and swallowed it
They really do know when they're ready

Piffle · 09/10/2007 22:49

oh he was 23 wks when he did that btw
he was born march 22

nappyaddict · 09/10/2007 22:50

you can blw before 6 months if they can sit up and pick up the food. not recommended but i have known a few people do it.

Tommy · 09/10/2007 22:52

my 8m old can eat spaghetti ellsbells - he just grabs handfuls and shoves it in. The thing is about BLW is that everything is eaten with fingers so no need for mashing

ruddynorah · 09/10/2007 23:11

you wouldnt mash the spog bol. you would just hand it over as it is. you can adapt it to make it easier for example put chunkier bits of veg in and save those for your baby. or keep the mince in big bits, so don't break it up too much, so easier to pick up. or you could do it more like meatballs with spaghetti. the only thing you would need to consider for sure is that you keep it low or no salt. so only add salt to your own portion, not to the whole dish.

SharpMolarBear · 10/10/2007 06:44

I have just started BLW at 23 weeks. Not much actually goes in (a little does) but he's getting used to eating with us, handling food and putting it in his mouth, and he's also tasting the new flavours.

Elsbells · 10/10/2007 13:26

wow ok
Going to do more reading about this.

Sounds interesting

I would actually recommend the hipp rice. DS loves it and it tastes a bit like ready brek not wallpaper, honest.
