Trying to cut out a breastfeed but toddler goes on water strike

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this and has any advice please? DD is 18 months and I'm keen to cut out her morning breastfeed (will keep the bedtime one for now).

For the last week or so I've managed to give it after rather than before breakfast (with some whining) and have been trying to push it later and later with a mix of distract/delay and don't offer, don't refuse. But she's so stubborn that she refuses all other fluids! By 11/12 today she had only had a couple of sips of water under protest and hadn't passed much urine compared to normal :( She still ate a good breakfast and lunch but whatever cup I tried she wasn't having fluids.

She's never really taken to milk or water in a cup but was hoping she would be thirsty enough. I'm not concerned about the calcium if she doesn't drink milk as she has plenty of cheese and yoghurt but she needs water at least!

She has been quite keen on going down my top for the last few weeks (usually at the most inappropriate moments), which she never used to do, so maybe this just isn't the right time to try and cut out a feed? :( I have a couple of weeks off work now so was hoping to get this done before I go back :(

Try wearing a roll neck jumper that she can't pull down. Keep going with the alternative fluid. It could be that plain water is too different, maybe really watered squash so there's some taste. She might be assuming that as she still has a night feed she wants day too. Maybe considering expressing for night time feed then she'll get used to having the milk in a cup and that might encourage her to use a cup. Kids are funny. Keep persevering.
