hi im new to this site but have been reading some posts.
I need some advice please as i have seen what gurus you all are at weaning!

ds is 16 weeks nearly 17 weeks, over the last 2 days he has become so irratable, wanting more feeds, screaming the house down (with no tears).

You would think he was in pain but there is no signs of it, DH thought it could be trapped wind but ds doesnt bring his knees up to his chest when hes like it, poohs are fine, sleeping bit more than usual.

Def not teething as when he is anything and everything will go in to his mouth and there is no sign of that when hes like it.

So MN is it a growing phase hes going through??
Does he need more food? Dont really want to start him on solids until hes 6 months.

they have a massive growth spurt at 16 weeks
my DS turned into an eating machine and then it settled down
no need to wean, just fill him with lots of milk

newbe · 26/09/2007 09:22

last night he was screaming that much he refused his bottle, when he calmed down he then had his bottle, is it normal for them to be this upset during the growth spurt??

should say as well no temp at all

Sounds like a growth spurt from the wanting more food and sleeping more. I really wouldn't wean as there are more calories in milk, so it wouldn't help.

Also if he is having an iritable tummy, then putting solids in may well make it worse.

Good for you for wanting to wait for 6 months - I have done that with DD and it worked really well

newbe · 26/09/2007 09:47

but is it usual that they are this upset?

maybe he is just a bit under the weather?

might have a bit of tummy ache

have you changed his formula? sometimes, the hungry baby milk can give little ones a tummy ache

does a warm bath seem to soothe him?

i;d leave solids, especially as it is a bit too early, and if he is getting upset, adding something new is not neccesarily going to help

I go to a cranial osteopath and she said that growth spurts can actually be quite uncomfortable for some babies for a few days. It could just be that. Looking back, I think dd was quite unsettled. HAve you tried any baby massage to calm him down. DD still loves it (17 months) and signs more, more when I stop!

newbe · 26/09/2007 09:59

he usually loves his baths, but last night wasnt himself in it.

I havent changed his milk as i know how that can affect them.

he seems fine so far today, MIL had ds on sunday as i had to take ds1 to swimming and dh was working, i really hope she hasnt gave him any solids

sounds like a growth spurt to me tbh. And as for your mil, she wouldn't dare would she??

newbe · 26/09/2007 10:08

oh my MIL is made of something else, weve crossed paths over a lot of things, think i will phone dh and get him to phone her and ask

I would. It is your decision when to wean and if you want to wait for 6 months there are some really, really good reasons too. I did it a bit early because I was put under so much pressure to to encourage dd to sleep through the night. She still doesn't at 17 months so I wish I hadn't bothered!

newbe · 26/09/2007 10:36

DH has just phoned me back, hes spoken to his mom and she said that she hasnt, but Dh doesnt belive her, he knows when she is lying.

DH has just said that hes sure that she has gave ds some solids.

I hope it is just a growth spurt he still seems fine this morning more like his usual self.

How terrible for you not to be able to trust her

Theclosetpagan · 26/09/2007 16:12

Could be anything newbe - I'd lean towards a growth spurt myself but a virus could equally make your DS under the weather.

Adding solids won't make any difference (despite what your well meaning MIL may think) as your DS won't take in enough calories from them initially. I'd say up the milk feeds and hopefully your little one will settle down in a few days.

Thanks for everyones advice and help

ds has a blocked tear duckt (sp??) and he is a little snuffly from it as his nasal cant work proerly because of it.

He was his usual self yestarday so hopefully he wont be as grissly now.
