How to sweeten natural yogurt?

Have recently stopped buying petits filous when I realised how sugary it is, but now DS (7.5 months) is turning his nose up at natural yogurt or fromage frais, even with chopped dried apricots / sultanas etc stirred in to sweeten it up. What else can I add to make it sweeter for him? Maple syrup? Golden syrup? Or is that just as bad as the petits filous?

Syrup's just sugar. Don't give a baby syrup!

How about pureed apple?

totaleclipse · 19/09/2007 11:52

blast some banana and mix it in.

purpleflower · 19/09/2007 11:53

I used to blend up fresh fruit and add it. try greek yoghurt, I found that DS preferred it.

Might be worth putting yog+dried fruit in liquidizer. Or mix with fruit puree

Easiest thing (if lazy like me!) is to buy the pots of 'Fruitpura' and stir some in. They are just pure fruit, nothing added. Not quite as good as doing it yourself, as it will have been heat treated etc to preserve it, but when life is just to short to puree all your own fruit they are fab!

DD also used to turn her nose up at plain yogurt. We made a big thing of letting her have the fruitpura....much smacking of lips and open mouth from dd...and then showing her that we were adding it to the yoghurt. Nothing but contented eating after that!

some compote - apricot can be very sweet so only need a little.

thehairybabysmum · 19/09/2007 12:29

i just add fruit and agree that greek yoghurt seems creamier and less sharp than normal natural yoghurt.

p. filous are v. sweet...im sure your ds will get used to the change with time if you just keep offering it.

You could also try fruit with cream...again no added sugar and my ds absolutely demolishes anything with cream on!

Agree with totaleclipse - Mashed banana is a great base, and any other fruit you have chucked in.

midnightexpress · 20/09/2007 13:21

I get frozen (or fresh, if your budget's up to it) blueberries, blast them in the micro for about 30-40 secs and mix them up with the yogurt.

I'd also persist with the yogurt on its own. Make sure you get a whole milk one (ie not low fat) - my guys both lap up the yeo valley organic one.

kiskidee · 20/09/2007 13:22

i used to put in hi fruit jam.

slim22 · 20/09/2007 13:27

greek yogurt and apple/grape juice concentrate or fruit spreads from health shops.
Mashed banana.

Danone Activia pots with real fruit at the bottom.

little explorers kids fruity fromage frais at waitrose.

Zazette · 20/09/2007 13:29

Mix plain greek yog into the petits filous. Gradually shift the balance from mostly pf to all Greek yog

tullytwo · 20/09/2007 13:31

rachels organic do a lovely vanilla yogurt that my ds loves - it is low fat though so I know some mums dont like giving low fat stuff to kids

Piffle · 20/09/2007 13:31

rachels little ones are good too
still suagr added but more fruit and less sugar

Jacksmybaby · 20/09/2007 14:58

Cool thanks all for suggestions. He has something of a sweet tooth (damn those petits filous!) and won't eat fruits like apple, plum, pear etc without them being mashed with something sweeter like banana or creamier like baby rice... so ideas like apricot compote etc are good...
