Am I feeding my 7 month too much solids?

Hi,

I'm just looking for some advise regarding my 7 month old. I know babies drink less milk once on solids but I'm worried he's not getting enough / and if it's because he's having too many solids etc.

He's on 3 meals a day. Porridge/weetabix & fruit for breakfast, 1/2 a jar or pouch and 1/2 pouch fruit for lunch, 1/2 a jar or pouch for dinner and 1/2 pouch fruit for dinner.

He was on 7oz bottles but lately has only been drinking 3oz or 4oz max of them at each feed. He has 4 feeds a day and still wakes for 1 in the night :-(

Sometimes even on his morning bottle before breakfast he will only drink 3-4oz so then I think maybe he's not having too many solids as it's a new day and he hasn't even had any yet!

Just looking for some advice really x

That’s quite a lot of solids if you just started weaning at 6 months.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/05/2020 18:12

How much formula would you say he's having in total over 24 hours?

I agree that it does seem more than average. Perhaps miss out one of the meals or just the puddings?

Luxembourgmama · 14/05/2020 18:15

Mine ix the same she is refusing milk

Becky6X · 14/05/2020 18:22

He has been weaned since 4 months. In 24 hours I'd say approx 20oz. Once he drops the night feed it will be around 15-16oz x

I would do more finger foods and less pouches - would help him to self feed but also probably up his milk intake as he will eat less solids

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/05/2020 18:32

20 floz is fine but if he takes any less he'll need a multivitamin Smile

BabyLlamaZen · 14/05/2020 18:34

Don't like to be that person but any chance you can give him something other than pouches? They tend to be full of rubbish. If you're doing purees can you puree some fresh stuff? No harm in giving health visitor a call.

BabyLlamaZen · 14/05/2020 18:35

Also yes to finger food so that he can practise chewing instead of just swallowing stuff.

Hi!

I think this is completely in line with what the NHS suggests.

It's exactly the same as my 7 month old too, 3 meals a day and 5 bottles about 4oz per feed. Weight wise she's following the growth chart and she's perfectly happy.

I suggest calling health visitor if your worried about anything specific but sounds perfectly healthy to me (I'm no expert though!)

X

Seems fine for 3 months in. Keep an eye on nappies in this weather though in case he needs extra water (probably okay with pouches but might need some with any dry stuff).

I used to do milk first then solids after.

So at 7mo, bottle of milk on waking, then some fingers of toast after for breakfast, bottle of milk at 11am, then something like quesedilla (just cheese and ham inside) at 12. 3pm another bottle, then about 4.30 a Brocoli floret or two, strip of cold chicken breast and a couple of homemade wedges.
Last bottle at 7pm before bed.

So milk first, food after.

userabcname · 04/06/2020 18:01

My 7mo is on 2 meals a day. He's breastfed though so don't know about milk intake but I don't feel like he's feeding less. I'm following the rough guide of what I did with dc1 - lunch from 6mo, introduce breakfast from 7mo and then dinner at around 8-9mo. I don't know if that's right but it's what I'm doing!

firstimemamma · 04/06/2020 18:07

The production of pouches involves heat treatment - which ensures they can be safely stored on supermarket shelves without needing to be kept refrigerated. This process has a big affect on nutritional value and a lot of the goodness is lost, but people don't think of this and just see the fruit / veg on the ingredients list. As previous posters have suggested I'd maybe considering cutting down a little bit of course it's your choice.

LeGrandBleu · 05/06/2020 05:49

Pouches are incredibly sweet and by giving them you also risk to encourage a taste for unnatural food which will be hard to change. The combination of fruits and veg have no place in real life as who eat apple ( apple sauce rather) with zucchini’s or spinach with blueberries?
Go for real food
