Snacks and meals - what do you do?

Hello, nearly 10 months old dd is eating well during the day. However I am of the opinion that she should have regular meal and snack times whereas my partner seems to think she should get bits of food throughout the day to "keep her occupied". For example this morning she had breakfast at 8ish, he then offered more food at 9, 10 and 11! I would have just given her a substantial snack at 10.30 ish as her lunch is at 12.30 ish...
What do you guys think? What do you do with your little ones?

No, don’t let her graze. Recognising and responding to hunger and fullness requires actually experiencing them, and now is the time for your Dd to learn this.
Offer snacks for the right reason, not to distract or occupy her. If she’s eating to be ‘occupied’, she might end up boredom eating as she gets older which could lead to a negative relationship with food.
It’s also harder to keep track of how much she’s eating, which is a good idea for children under 12 months.

At 10 months 3 meals a day. No snacks until 12 months, if they are hungry in between meals they need more milk.

Food is for nutrition and it isn’t a toy or form of entertainment.

Thank you - I thought so! Good point about future relationship with food and learning to be full!
We are giving two snacks (mid morning and mid afternoon) as advised by the HV, she has reflux so smaller meals more often are better for her.
Now how to tell the other half so not to upset him... Hmm

I've never been good at not upsetting them but DH is a bit lazy and doesn't read up on things so I tend to just tell him or give him something to read.

This is an excellent guide to show him. You'll probably need from about page 77 Smile

Thank you @JiltedJohnsJulieed - great resource!

We do baby led weaning with DD2 who is 8 months so meal times can take substantially longer than when spoon feeding so no real need for snack as she spends half the day eating Grin. But with DD1 at the same age who was purely spoon fed she had a "snack" of attempted finger foods once a day, only to try and encourage self feeding so I dont think snacking as a whole is terrible but it all depends on eating habits I guess.
Also I know it wasnt your question but I do totally recommend BLW it really helps with healthy eating habits allowing them to decide for themselves when they're full and to help get used to different textures etc Smile

Toastiemaker · 12/05/2020 08:47

Thanks @EastMidsMumOf1 we are doing BLW for a part of her meals (eg weetabix with spoon and banana with fingers for breakfast) and she's very good at it, she gets most of it in her mouth! Her latest thing is picking up peas and individual grains of rice to eat! The spoon comes in then otherwise she would be eating all day... Grin

Have you managed to convince DH yet? Smile

Hoolahlah66 · 14/05/2020 14:55

I have a 9 month old and we have a semi routine.

7am wake and medium sized bottle
8am breakfast
Nap 9-10
Lunch 11.30
Bottle 2pm & nap until 3.30
Dinner 4.30-5
Bed 7pm

Seems to work well although he eats for England! I’d suggest getting some books if you haven’t already shove me under his nose. If he is anything like my husband he will think he knows best until he discovers he doesn’t eg won’t be told by me!! It will be so hard to break the snacking habit if you don’t change sooner rather than later. Good luck!

Hoolahlah66 · 14/05/2020 14:57

Em* don’t shove me under his nose...

Toastiemaker · 15/05/2020 07:59

Hee hee! Mine won't be told by me either, but follows advice from out HV!! Bless her, I just ask her to tell him!
@JiltedJohnsJulie getting there, although the other day he still gave her half a digestive 20 minutes before lunch because "She was hungry" ... ConfusedAngry
