Hi, I'm a FTM and in need of some friendly advice!

Baby has taken to weaning so well and is flying through. I can't keep up! Within 3 weeks of his first taste he has upped to 3 small meals a day. He loves his food which is great. My concern is his appetite for milk has gone down and I'm worried he's not getting enough fluids.

He's now v constipated so is having lots of water through the day today. I've also tried him on some apple and pear to see if that will get anything moving. Usually he is offered sips of water at meals but always shows signs he wants more food so ends up having a big portion but then has no space for milk (he has healthy fruit and veg purees I should add!)

My question is should we stop him after a small amount of solids and offer him the bottle instead? Yesterday he only had 20oz of milk and about 2oz of water - is that enough for his age?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Constipation is not uncommon when solids are initially introduced. That's just because their body is learning how to cope with digesting new things. It’s sometimes, but not always, a sign of dehydration.
Prune juice is a natural laxative that works for many babies to promote soft, easy-to-pass poos. Dilute 1-2 tablespoons of juice in 2-3oz of water.
Give porridge for breakfast. Not only does it have the milk in it, but the fibre in the oats will be good for constipation.

Every child is different, but as a rough guideline, it should be about 20oz a day until 9 months. It’s worth remembering though that, just like adults, sometimes babies are less hungry than at other times.
I’d slow down a bit on the solids. initially, weaning is about getting your baby used to different tastes and textures and even just working out the different tongue and mouth movements.
Give milk before solids (or at least half a feed). I gave milk before solids at meals until about 9 months, then I switched, first with lunch, then breakfast and lastly dinner.
If you’re still struggling getting the milk into him, at least make sure his has some full fat yogurt or cheese daily.
My DS started dropping milk feeds just before 8 months. Once 3 meals a day had been established, with snacks during the day, he dropped his morning feed and his afternoon 3pm feed.
