I've had a look at the formula tub and it's says that once weaning has been established, baby should be having between 500 and 600ml of milk a day.
Up until 3 weeks ago he was having 4 210ml bottles a day along with 3 meals, his schedule looked a bit like this:

7am bottle
9am breakfast - toast/weetabix/porridge and a bit of fruit
11am bottle
1pm lunch - sandwich/pasta with fruit and a cheese stick or biscuit
3pm bottle
5.30pm dinner - whatever dh and I have and a yoghurt
7.30pm bottle

This schedule and what he had varied with who had him before lockdown (3 days a week he was at nursery, with my mum or mil and dh and I are happy for them to feed him how they saw fit within reason)

He started leaving between 30 and 60ml in the bottle just after schools etc started closing roughly 4 weeks ago? so I reduced them to 150ml.

The past 2 days he has refused his afternoon bottle so his intake today and yesterday has been 450ml he has had more water though, we have a beaker of water in the livingroom that he picks up and drops through the day, which dh and I help him to drink from. He not quite grasped the tip up and suck yet Grin

I know his consumption is now more in line with the info on the tub, however, his actual food intake hasn't changed.

Is it normal for him to have dropped such a significant amount in a relatively short window of time?

You could maybe offer a little porridge before bed then bottle just before sleep.

His morning cereal and then evening porridge would also have formula in

I use half formula and half cows milk when making porridge or sauces for pasta etc so I know my DS is getting as much as possible. It could be teething, my ds is also 9 months and went off his food this week and upped bottles, last week it was vice versa... out popped his two top teeth and he started crawling today

Fleamaker123 · 16/04/2020 21:14

It looks like he's eating a really good diet, plenty of food. I would let him drop the bottle in the afternoon and gradually work towards one in the morning and one in the evening. Don't forget he'll get milk in his food as well, when he has porridge and weetabix, or with mashed potato etc. Mine did gradually lose interest in the milk, apart from bedtime!

OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 16/04/2020 21:34

Thank you all, I'll try the porridge before bed @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz and see how he takes it.

Ahhh @Shatandfattered could be, he hasn't cut any yet, but they are there, you can feel them under his gums! He started crawling last week, and is in everything!! I wish you much luck with yours!!

@fleamaker123 would you suggest I aim to keep his 7am and before bed bottles in that case? In my head it makes sense like that? I am working towards him not falling asleep on his bedtime bottle at the moment 🙄 easier said than done!

Thank you very much. He's also standing up straight on his feet with his hands on the ground so the second he works out he has to hold onto something higher to get up straight I think he'll be off cruising! Hope the porridge helps

Fleamaker123 · 17/04/2020 11:58

That bedtime bottle can be a hard habit to break, think it's def more a comfort thing. My next door next (who also happens to be a health visitor) went cold turkey and just got rid of all bottles when her son turned one Shock I wasn't brave enough to do that!! I gradually reduced the amount and he lost interest.. See how he goes, they're all different aren't they, sometimes I was just winging it... Just when you think you've cracked it and feel smug they change again! Good luck!

Another vote for dropping the afternoon bottle first and offering a drink and snack instead. Once he’s done that and got used to it, drop the 11 am bottle and do the same.

At 10 months they only need 400ml a day and this drops to 300ml at 12 months, so I think you are right to start thinking about dropping bottles now Smile

OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 18/04/2020 00:00

Thank you both for that!
He's oddly not that interested in snacking, he's a meal or nothing child (his dad's like that while I'm a grazer) but I might try offering snacks and water or squash in place of the day time bottles over the next couple of weeks and then start our battles with morning and evening bottles the closer he gets to 1 😁

If he is having less than 17oz of milk a day it’s time to start on vitamins.

OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 26/04/2020 19:17

Hi @Selfsettling3 he's averaging between 15 and 19oz a day:
7oz first feed
5oz daytime
7oz before bed

I say between as sometimes he finishes his bottles sometimes he doesn't.

In this instance do you think vitamin supplements are necessary? I am at this point reluctant to give them to him unless they are super necessary. I thought he'd be getting his needs meet with a balanced diet?

All babies and children up to age 5 are advised to supplement vitamins A,C and D unless they are taking more than 20oz of formula per day as that's already fortified.

dementedpixie · 26/04/2020 19:31

Although that says 500mls so that's closer to 17oz I suppose

Selfsettling3 · 26/04/2020 22:01

NHS advice is all 6 months to 5 year olds who have less than 17oz of formula a day should take multivitamins.
