Drinks and cups for 6 month old

My LO is about to turn 6 months. He was wholly breastfed and refused a bottle. I started weaning a couple of weeks ago and he is a very enthusiastic eater and happily eating a mix of purees, mashed and finger foods.

I am wondering though whether I should be offering him water with his food and if so what type of cup to use? I tried a sippy cup but he refuses it like he did with the bottle. I give him a breastfeed 30 mins before he eats. Should I persist with the sippy cup or is there a better type of cup to use?

Yes you are fine to offer tap water from 6 months if you are in the UK. If he don't take a soppy cup, have you tried a doidy cup or a 360?

I had a babacup for mine! Looked like a shot glass lol but perfectly sized for babies!

Think about the size of sippy cups and beakers, they are like buckets for babies!

Both were drinking properly out of open cups shortly after 1!

My 4 year old regularly has water out of a wine glass at dinner!

They also had proper cutlery and ceramic plates as opposed to plastic.

Thanks both. Probably a stupid question but with the open cups do you fill them to the top and encourage LO to sip from the top or just put a little in and tilt them?

My baby hates me doing anything for him e.g. he will grab preloaded spoons from me and try to feed himself. I am wondering how that would work with an open cup, presumably we will get quite wet!

If you want to use an open cup get a doidy cup (slanted so they can see the water without having it in line with their face). Only put about an inch of water in it. LO might also like a straw beaker but these can easily get mouldy if not dried properly.

I started by half filling the footy cup and offering it on the bath. That way the spills don't matter Smile

Thanks MsChatterbox. I will try a doidy cup.

That is a good idea about trying in the bath jilted. LO tends to try to drink the bath water so having a cup of drinking water as a distration should help with that too!

Best cup I found was your basic sippy cup, found non spill ones had tricky lids or difficult to drink from.

I use open cups on my EBF who has never had a bottle (never tried as opposed to refusing), these are brilliant

It took 2 weeks for her to do it on her own

Thanks all. I have been trying the doidy cup and it has been working brilliantly. Was very surprised how quickly LO took to it with surprisingly little mess.
