blw breakfasts - need inspiration

so, we were doing mostly blw, but with spoon-fed porridge at breakfast time because that's what i was eating and DS couldn't figure out how to eat it with his hands.

but he has started refusing the spoon and we're both getting a bit sick of pancakes.

any bright ideas? (apart from dry weetabix, which he thought was some kind of puzzle rather than something to eat)

Toast; french toast; mini shredded wheat type things; porridge pancakes; thick rice pudding...

Also if you make porridge thick enough he'll learn how to eat it with his hands quite quickly.

I just load a spoon and put it in ds2's hand. Then when he's done "we" dip it to get some more and he does the rest. He's quite happy with that approach.

hmm. how does one make a porridge pancake? that sounds ideal.

liking rice pudding idea as well.

(oh the spoon loading thing works for yoghurt but not porridge, for some reason).

You can also make weetabix stodgy enpugh to be eaten with the hands. I used to do the load the spoon approach, but now DS (13 months) likes to do it all himself. He gets fed up with the spoon about halfway through and then finishes up cramming handfuls in. Messy and inelegant, but hey.

Any other bread products seem to go down well, toast, english muffin etc. DS usually has fruit as well as cereal at brekkie to - currently he is gorging himself on satsumas.

Ds2 has Shreddies. I soak them in milk to soften them a bit then take them out of the bowl and put them on his tray. As long as you don't let them get too soggy they're really easy for him to pick up.

He's also swiped the older dcs Weetos and Cheerios but they're a bit smaller and harder to pick up if his pincer grip isn't quite there (and they're also sugar coated!).

shreddies, cheerios, rice crispies multi-grain shapes, etc - soak for a few minutes in milk and then serve, either in a stuck down bowl (if your lo is prone to hurling things) or straight onto the highchair tray.

The porridge pancake recipe is on aitch's blog. Not sure where exactly because I'm rubbish at that sort of thing

Habbibu · 07/09/2007 20:57

It's been refined a bit on the forum: www.babyledweaning.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32
