REDUCE MILK INTAKE when start on solids????

Hi there

I have a question to ask about my 6 month old baby mindee who we're weaning (mum has asked me for help).

Do you reduce milk intake when you start giving more solids?

Anyone know how much milk they should have each day?

Baby is nearly 7 months old and currently struggling with the variety of solids and is also leaving around 50/60ml of her milk each feed. The bottles I am given are 260ml (9oz's) which would make 1040ml (33/34oz) a day if she drank the whole lot. If she leaves 60ml of each bottle then her daily intake is more like 800ml (26oz).

Does anyone know what's recommended? I personally think this is a lot of milk (if she has the whole lot of the full bottles) to have on top of the food.

She eats very well at breakfast but I THINK that's because she's gone a long time without a feed of any sort.

Advice please as my ds was BF and weaned at 4 months as the new 6 month guideline wasn't out then.

Cheers

That sounds like loads of milk.

Mine dropped milk and upped the solids on his own account and I think its usually recommended to let them sort it out themselves.

Not very helpful I'm afraid

milk should be offered before food, and food is an extra at this point, not a replacement for food, milk should still be primary source of nourishment for the first year... baby will gradually want more food than milk, but let the baby lead the way and don;t start dropping feeds yet..way too soon for 3 meals a day
food is for fun until you are one!

eh should have 21 oz at least at this age so 26 isnt too much

i would give milk then food.

Oh cool - shows how much I know I've looked after several babies but they were all fed first then give less milk and the other baby I have currently is 8 months and on 3 meals and lots of it. All babies are so different and this is the first time I've been asked to help myself (you have to be careful giving advice to parents sometimes). As ds was BF for first 7/8 months, I find it hard to know how much milk they should have.

Thanks so much for your help....this is all very reassuring!

Oh....btw, I wasn't saying I thought the 26oz was too much, just that 34oz sounded a lot.

Looks like you're sorted! Just thought I'd post to let you know I did read your post in the staff room! Glad you're feeling better today. Have a good weekend, see you on Monday.

My 6 month old mindee is having

BF early morning

Breakfast - baby rice & fruit then between 2 - 4oz milk

lunch - solids inc protein then 4 -6oz milk

mid afternoon - 8oz milk feed

tea - solids

BF before bed

This is obviously enough for him and mum is happy that he gets a balanced diet. He was taking quite a bit more milk - 6-8oz at breakfast, lunch and mid afternoon but it has slowly decreased as his solids have increased.

They need a minimum of 20oz when weaning. At 6 months my ds had 3 tiny meals plus his milk feeds (he started weaning at 5 1/2 months). I always staggered the milk and solids so he was able to take both e.g.

7am - milk
8am - breakfast
11am - milk
12pm - solids
3pm - milk
5pm - solids
7.15pm - milk

He still had a night feed until 8 months too.

I didnt make ds drop any feeds and he naturally lost interest in his feeds by himself - there is no need to help them along with it by cutting their milk. If he is taking less than 9oz then ask the mum to only make up 8oz feeds so that less gets wasted. She can then gradually make them less as he starts to take less from them.

When I said loads I meant the 34oz btw!

There is no way on earth I could get ds to drink 20oz of milk, they are all different
