Making puree with breast milk

I pureed some cooked sweet potato with breast milk and put it in the freezer in portions. I've defrosted one portion in the fridge overnight.

I'd like to serve it at about body temperature, like I would with breast milk.

Do I heat it until it's piping hot and then allow it to cool till it's lukewarm? Or can I warm it slightly to body temperature and serve? Not sure what's safe and will preserve the most nutrients.

DS is 6 months and has only just begun solids a few days ago so I'm new to all this.

Thanks to anyone who can help Smile

I don’t think I ever froze anything with my bm in as I have that thing that makes bm go rank when frozen. So I don’t know for sure but my instinct would be to heat hot then cool, in food hygiene terms. With the bm enzyme thing, the way to get around it is heat the milk to almost boiling then freeze, and apparently despite antibodies being killed off, it’s still better for baby than any other kind of milk. And presumably you’re still feeding baby as much as you ever were so they’ll be getting plenty nutrition, don’t worry. It’s a while til food starts to actually replace milk.

I think I'd warm it until it was hot and then let it cook.

Just wondering how old your baby is as this seems like a very old fashioned way of weaning and a lot of work for you?

@JiltedJohnsJulie OP said baby was 6 months.
The health visitor actually advises to do this so it certainly isn't "old fashioned"

Thanks all. My baby's 6 months and has only started weaning a few days ago.

I prepared this sweet potato ahead of time because I was considering weaning him a little early, but ultimately decided not to. I'd read that using his normal milk was better to help him get used to the taste, so I just pureed with that. I agree there are probably easier ways!

I've been weaning for a month and I tend to defrost then heat just enough. 10 seconds usually does it and the more watery it is the quicker it heats.

You can start to use full fat milk for more liquid like purée but you're right to use breastmilk first. Gradually introduce high allergy foods like milk, eggs, peanuts etc.

And enjoy, it's a lot of fun. We're in full blown casseroles and spag Bol already, she's a food demon! The blender is a god send :)
