Finger food for 6 month old

I started weaning just before my LG hit 6 months - started off on purees and after the usual face pulling, she seemed to really like them and would happily eat up smooth purees that I made or ones out of a pouch. I also started to offer some finger food, but just banana, broccoli and avocado along side the melty puffs/wafers. It was all going quite well doing both, but over the last few days she's turning her nose up at purees and only wants finger foods. That's fine by me, but I am completely stuck for ideas. I need things that are quick to prepare or that I can prepare in advance and store in the fridge until needed.

I can see her chewing her food and moving it around her mouth which I'm taking as a good sign of progress so I'm sure she would be fine with whatever I offer her, but it's just trying to think of things to give her. I've also had some failings of trying to steam carrots/sweet potato/squash into the right level of softness (it's either too hard or just ends up completely mushed so she can barely pick it up!) Some guidance or advice from anyone whose been there and done it would be greatly appreciated!

Literally everything! Dd has steak, rare tuna, sausages, omelettes, sandwiches, scrambled eggs, wraps, savoury muffins, soup with toast fingers, hummus and cucumber etc from 6 months.

Just watch out for salt content, choking hazards and no honey.

Fishcakes can be made ahead, frozen and microwaved when you want them. Really mild curries with fat udon noodles for small hands. Spag bol. Casseroles (boneless meat and keep the chunks big so they can grip).

Anything except whole nuts, honey, known allergens, things with salt and (lots of) sugar.
Anything you eat, she can eat to be honest.

Eggy bread, sweet potato wedges, crumpets, small veg like peas or sweetcorn, toast crusts, plain pasta, small bits of cheese, Fish is good because it breaks up easily.

fingers of wholemeal toast with cream cheese or fruit butter
Baby breadsticks dipped in humous mixed with greek yoghurt or mashed avocado and greek yoghurt
peeled chunks of pear and cubes of ripe melon or watermelon (check the seeds are removed)
soft cooked twists of pasta dipped in pomodoro or carbonara sauce
cheese toastie cut into small squares
sweet potato wedges with the skin cut off
small pieces of pancake or omlette

Be careful with the melty puffs and other similar baby junk food. Puffs are basically doritos for baby with some vegetable powder. The main ingredient is corn flour followed by oil, so nothing healthy there and high chance of giving baby a taste for artificial food.

Try to introduce some soups or make some tastier mashed food.

My LO loves melon and pear chopped into fingers.

She had beans (no added sugar/salt) on toast the other day and absolutely loved it. I love watching her with messy meals

I give ds whatever I'm having.
Scrambled eggs on toast and jacket potatoes are definite winners.

He still loves the fruit purees, but I give them to him in a beaker now and he drinks them like smoothies.

Penne pasta tubes
Strips of ham

Torn up chicken

Following this with interest. My LG is only a week or two into weaning but clamps her mouth shut if there's a spoon coming.. and will eat anything and everything she can feed herself.

Jxtina86 · 24/01/2020 21:39

Thanks all! Offered up some different bits based on your suggestions and after a few cursory nibbles, she decided to have puree instead 🤦🏼‍♀️ but I think she likes to have a few options as she did go back and forth and seemed really happy to just play with her food which I guess is what it's all about! Thank you again 😊

Following. Just started weaning my 6mth old twins. They were 6 weeks early so made sure to wait til 6th months . Twin 1 is grand so far, started with the ellas pouches to get them going. Stage 1 and stage 2 ones. Twin 2 not going so well though, gags every feed and ends up vomiting. Every time. Not so bad with yogurt or the smooth purees but anything textured and its like hes thinking wtf is this? Whst do i do with this?
Twin 1 also happily chews on toast and butter etc twin 2 not so sure.
Do i stop with the purees and just go with finger foods?

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 26/01/2020 00:04

@Hairwizard have you tried putting the puree in a cup for you to hold while twin 2 takes sips? That's what I did for ds as he wouldn't take them off a spoon and hated the open pouch, and I have now starting making smoothies (basically just fruit pureed with orange or apple juice) and he takes it in the same way.
Regarding toast, could it be the soft texture? Would bread sticks be a better option for twin 2, they can get a better hold on the stick then.
I would continue with finger foods, I was talking to a couple of friends before I started weaning and they advised me that until baby is 1 food is more for fun than to eat as your just introducing baby to different textures and flavours, I've used that as my mantra since I started (Christmas) and not only has it kept me calm when he rejects stuff and get grumpy with me, it's also helped me relax about the mess 😂

GiveHerHellFromUs · 26/01/2020 05:16

@Hairwizard don't forget that not all babies are ready for weaning at exactly 6 months. Try him with finger food and if he's not interested there's nothing wrong with giving him a few more weeks before trying again

Hairwizard · 26/01/2020 18:15

Thinking he might do the finger foods ok, yogurt and smooth stuff hes ok but textured stuff hes gagging on it.
They both like bansna but find it hard to keep a grip on it lol.

Jxtina86 · 26/01/2020 19:12

@Hairwizard how do you cut the banana? I saw a hack on Instagram where you peel the banana and then push your finger through the tip and it splits into three segments. Much easier to grip and less sticky (although after it's been assaulted by baby hands it gets sticky after a while!)
