Polite ways of telling people I'm not going to be starving my DS if I do BLW

I have just been told by several different people over the course of this weekend:

  • my DD is ready for weaning as she's started sleeping badly (she isn't quite 4 months)

  • I can't believe you're waiting so long, you'd have much better nights

  • I had to wean my DS at 4/5 months because my milk just wasn't enough

  • your DS's sleep problems are because he's hungry

  • babies need weaning because they can't get enough calories from milk alone

etc

People have made me feel like I'm starving him if I do this and that unless I want broken nights for ever, I'd better start shovelling in purees as fast as I can.

Is there a polite way to tell people that they're wrong?

mine didn't sleep properly between 4 and 5 months

he is now 5.5 months and has been sleeping between 10.5-12 hours a night for the last week. He is fully breastfed, right at the top of the charts, and I am still waiting til 6 months to give him solids (as long as possible in fact, it's such a faff)

so don't bother. It's age (and/or teeth) related, not solid related. Lots of them go barmy at 4 months

The photos of the babies from the blog is a very good idea indeed - they look very bonny!

If you look at photos of my DS on my page, you'll see he's hardly underweight

I think that the other mantra to remember (which I think came from Aitch originally) is that 'food is for fun until they're one'.

DS who is now 21 months was solely BLWd and, yes, he did wake until about 13 months, but he was eating well from about 10 months and certainly much better than his peers (who were all puree fed) and still is.

Ignore them!

Aitch · 26/08/2007 21:52

actually, it was said to me by a nurse when she was telling me how to puree-feed my baby. i don't think it's an exclusively blw thing, but it makes a lot of sense i think and helps everyone to calm their jets.
sazzy he's gorgeous, i like his sunglasses. do a search on the blog for NHS and you'll come up with some pages from an NHS website saying finger food should be done from 6 months onwards.

PigeonPie · 26/08/2007 21:55

Well, I thought it originated from one of your posts, Aitch, and I was right, so my pg brain hasn't gone too addled

Aitch · 26/08/2007 21:57

it likely did, but don't you think it's interesting that it's not a BLW saying per se? i'd forgotten where i'd got it from but a pal reminded me. are you pregnant again, pp, congratulations. and a little .

PigeonPie · 26/08/2007 22:03

Yes, that is interesting that it isn't BLW per se, but I think it's a very good thing for us to adopt! It's not as if it's widely publicised anywhere else is it?

Pg rather a surprise (you'd have thought at my age I'd have learnt) but am thrilled now and am 4 mo. DS will be 2.2 when DC2 arrives (all being well), so we'll be doing BLW again next summer.

Aitch · 26/08/2007 22:05

oh how exciting. and did i mention i'm a little ?

PigeonPie · 26/08/2007 22:16

You did mention , hope you don't have to be for long?

Aitch · 26/08/2007 22:22

ttssssk, we're not even trying at the moment. i'm a bit under-encumbered in the fallopian tube department so it's all a bit risky and horrid for me. bleh.

terramum · 26/08/2007 22:22

Telling them to bog off would be my first thought...or (if I am feeling particularly argumentative) asking them to provide you with the details of the evidence-based studies they have based their "information" on & if they have informed the World Health organisation of this fabulous new research as they appear to be unaware of it
