Must have weaning stuff and where to start?

My daughter will be 6 months at Christmas so I'm planning to get her the weaning stuff she needs for Christmas. I'm a first time mum and have no idea what stuff she will need besides bowls and spoons?

Also how to I start doing it? What's the best foods to give her? Baby rice or purees? What is the best food to give to begin with?

Any recommendations for good books. I really don't know where to start and I don't want to enter this blindly. Thank you Smile

Bibs, high chair, sippy cup for water

Didn't puree anything, we just gave him appropriately shaped bits of what we were having (roughly Baby led weaning).

A steamer if you don't already have one, and some carrots. Plastic bowl and spoon. Ikea Antilop highchair. Small tupperware containers might be handy.

Just pass the kid bits off your own plate, or steam some carrot sticks for a few minutes until they're fairly soft, or broccoli, potato etc depending on what you have. Banana is easy. Bit of toast. Whatever.

Then clean it all up off the baby, the highchair, the floor, the walls and the cat ready for next time. Note that you can stick the entire seat of the ikea Antilop in the dishwasher.

Sweetcorn is encouraging because you can see it come out of the other end of the baby, proving that some did go in despite you feeling like you cleaned more of it off the wall than you originally put in the bowl.

If you are a boots parenting club member they quite often have a free ella's kitchen book for early weaning. It's puree based (unsurprisingly) but quite handy.
I got oil cloth to go under highchair - carpet in dining room- to try to save the floor.
Plastic backed long sleeved bibs?
Started out wanting to do BLW, turned out I had a baby bird who liked being fed with a spoon (often my food to be fair).

Munchkin make heat sensitive spoons which also don't have a "lip" so food comes off them easily.
Per NHS guidelines at 6mo you don't need to puree, you can mash or give finger food but I think it all depends on your baby- mine liked smooth things (as well as bits to chew/chuck) initially, not mashy things.
Be careful of salt content, have a look at the "not under this age" recommendations from NHS, bear in mind eventually blueberries will make nappies greenish black so don't panic when that happens.
Don't worry when they don't actually eat anything at first...

I wouldn’t over complicate it - we started with a bit of baby porridge and baby rice and already had a hand blender, I just used that to make some simple carrot purées etc. We only used that for about 2 or 3 weeks and then DS was happy with mashed food. So depending on what we were eating I would mash that up or if it wasn’t suitable I also used the Aldi baby pouches which I would add a bit of frozen peas or spinach too for a bit of added bulk and texture. And then gradually he just started eating pretty much the same as us no mashing required.
