Weaning at 4 months for CMPA/reflux

My 15 week old DD2 has been diagnosed with reflux caused by a cows' milk protein allergy. She is on SMA Alfamino formula which is cows milk free. The paediatrician has strongly advised me to start weaning her at 4 months because of this. I wasn't planning on starting til about 5.5 months as I did with DD1 and, while I am not looking to dispute the advice I've been given, I'm not quite sure how to wean starting at 4m.

Should I only give fruit and veg purées til 6 months and should I avoid other potential allergens and meat, fish etc until after 6 months, or is it ok to introduce them before that?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for non-dairy alternatives to Philadelphia and full fat Greek yogurt, both of which DD1 adored?

Thank you

I can’t offer any advice about whether to wean early, but I use the Koko brand yoghurt for my CMPA 1 year old as it’s calcium fortified. It’s not as calorific as normal Greek yogurt though but I think alpro make a soy Greek style yoghurt which might be better. We tried out several of the non dairy soft ‘cheeses’ and sadly they’re all horrible.

I had the same situation but at 3 months due to serious illness and weight loss. The paed referred us to Dietetics who helped enormously altho DC was still an inpatient so everything was done on the hospital stay. We had meal suggestions, high calories feeds, and follow up appointments so weren't on our own. I'd ask the paed for help if I were you.

I could have written this post! The only difference being that my DD is older than yours (5months) and we've just started on the same formula on Wednesday. They have advised us to wean her in a weeks time.
Following with interest!

@Knittinggurl Will you let me know how you get on? Hope it goes well x

This is my book from the health visitor. As you are only two weeks behind the suggested 17 weeks in this book, I would go along with these guidelines. I'm doing this with ds who I have had to wean early with the advice of my hv.

As well as the book above to follow, hv said just start with rice and then move onto one veg/fruit at a time and that it's important to introduce meat soon after.
I started last Thursday and can't believe how much happier ds is already

Sorry I just remembered i was told not to give gluten until 6 months. And if you do follow the above, then as you are introducing new foods one at a time it is easier to notice if baby has an allergy to any particular food

Hi there
Our paediatrician allergy specialist advised the same thing. So I spoke to a paediatric dietician and she advised the focus is to introduce peanut and egg the other big culprits sooner rather than later as can help prevent allergy. Under guidance and observations with a dietician. Equally with wheat, gluten and a few others. We're definitely going to do these few gently and safely at 4.5 months we think hand held by the dietician. And then do actual weaning (maybe baby led) at 5 / 5.5 months. See how we go.

Ps you should be able to request an nhs referral to a Paed dietician if in UK due to CMPA diagnosis.

I also agree with the one at a time for the allergy prone food types

Hi I weaned my little one at 4 months as well and I just puréed lots of different fruit and veg separately at first then started mixing them together to get different flavour combos stick to that until 6 months, and if any of the veg purées are to thick add a bit of the baby milk in and blend together, it will give it a good consistency. Also stay away from meat or fish until 6 months as it's not advised for their little stomachs that early.
Good luck! Smile
