About to stew some pear for my 4 month old son - can I use Evian?

Why Evian?

Shoobiedoo · 03/08/2007 15:33

Dunno Cos it's either that (the bottled water we happened to have in the house) or water filtered with a Brita filter - our tap water is horrid, scummy and bleachy tasting.

I don't mind either way as long as it's not unfiltered tap water.

No

It's not at all suitable I'm afraid. D you not have any tap water?

Mercy · 03/08/2007 15:34

oh right. In that case use the filtered tap water.

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 15:35

Don't know about Evian. Tap would be fine (filtered of course ).

Shoobiedoo · 03/08/2007 15:37

Are you sure filtered water is OK? I heard that the filter softens it by adding sodium. It says on some baby milk not to use filtered water.

I would have thought Evian was ok. Don't they use it in France to make up formula rather than going through the boiled water routine?

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 15:43

Gawd. I don't know. I use unfiltered tap.

tissy · 03/08/2007 15:44

as afr as I can remember, water that is labelled SPRING water is OK for bottles (and therefore should be OK for cooking for a baby), water labelled MINERAL water is not OK. Filtered tap water may contain bacteria, as the filters can sit for a month in the water, but tap water, unfiltered, as revolting as it may taste is quite safe.

ib · 03/08/2007 15:45

Evian is used in France to make babies' bottles, it says on it that it's suitable for use from birth. So I would have thought it should be OK.

Have just found this advice re bottled water

NAB3 · 03/08/2007 15:46

Make sure you boil the water first. BTW Pears are very watery. Are you sure you need to add water?

Mercy · 03/08/2007 15:50

Have just noticed your ds is 4 months old; he should still be having milk tbh.

NAB3 · 03/08/2007 15:54

Felt the same but didn't like to set anything off.

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 15:56

I was about to add a tentative comment along the lines of waiting until 6 months allows you to dispense with the purees. Which makes life much easier IME.

But don't want to cause a ruck. Weaned ds at 4 months, dd at 6, well, 7, which is how I know...

Shoobiedoo · 03/08/2007 15:59

Yes I know about the milk, I am not really sold on weaning him at all, wanted to BF for as long as poss, only he is big for his age and has been staring at us eating and has twice tried to grab food from me as I was eating, I was just curious to see what he would make of it. Was only going to offer him a teaspoon.

Evian fine.

Pears (at 4 months) not really okay.

But, I'm a stalwart for guidelines

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 16:01

The big thing is misleading. DD was even bigger than DS (99.7th centile and 98th centile respectively) and she did just fine on milk. Honestly, if you're not sold on it and want an easier life then I would wait. Pre-6 month purees are a right faff.

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 16:04

But I'm not nagging...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/08/2007 16:06

absolutely meandmy. Too much of a faff....

Shoobiedoo · 03/08/2007 16:12

Sheesh, I was only wondering. I am not one of those feed-em-up-to-get-em-through-the-night types. Also, being lazy, I could do without pureeing for a while. It was really just to see if he would accept or reject it.

Sorry - overreacted a bit. Felt bossed about. I have issues with my mother. What can I say?

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 16:15

Sorry

I am an evangelical sloth....

meandmyflyingmachine · 03/08/2007 16:16

It is a treading on eggshells subject IME.
