When to wean prem twins

My 2 girls were born 6 weeks premature, they’re currently 17 weeks (11 weeks adjusted). We’re a couple of month off starting to think about weaning but just wondered when others had started with their prem babies.

The girls are still very small for their age, 1 is 10lb & the other is 12lb

In most cases, babies born prematurely need to be introduced to solids by 5 - 8 months of uncorrected age (from their actual birth date), however it is best to wait until they are at least 3 months corrected age so that they can develop enough head control.

It's best to start weaning as soon as they appear ready, because introducing solids helps strengthen the muscles in the jaw and mouth and improves coordination, as well as making sure that rapidly-growing body is getting all the energy and nutrition it needs. You’ll know that they’re ready if they are showing interest in other people eating, putting things into their mouth, seem less satisfied with milk alone and can sit with good back and head support.

Every baby is an individual and will be ready at different stages. If they are not showing signs of being ready to wean don’t worry. It is better to delay a little rather than to rush them.

Mine were about 6 months uncorrected age. My DS took to it better than my DD. Remember you don't have to do everything at the same time with them. Good luck.

My LO wasn't premature but the same size as your smaller girl at 17 weeks. HV said not to worry about size but that if she was doubg all the things to show she was ready to crack on i.e. sitting up supported etc.
My nephew was 7weeks early and he was weaned at 6m not corrected and he's a halt healthy 5 year old now who eats like a horse :)
