gecko is 6 months on the 7th of aug and hes been exclusively breastfed up to now

except for a couple of doses of calpol (at imm. times), some gripe water, a lick of ice-cream and a good suck on a piece of bread.

the ice cream and bread was because she was quicker than me. she is very interested in food and tries to grab off my plate and anything that I am putting to my mouth.

I think she would enjoy starting to try some food in the next couple of weeks but I'm scared about how to start.
I have had a look at Aitchs blog but got a bit confused about how to use it
sorry, I couldn't get to the beggining if you see what I mean

any help greatly appreciated

try here you two i asked the mums who use my blog about gaggin and the comments were v interesting. (i thought so, anyway).

peachygirl · 30/07/2007 21:43

I'm sort of in this situation too. I've made some puree cubes but am tempted to give bits and bobs to DD too. She had a suck on a bit of melon today.

She has also eaten the corner off a paper bookmark and part of one of the pages of an Annabel Karmel book.. so I suppose that means she is ready

Hi marmite (waves)

GibbonInARibbon · 30/07/2007 21:43

oh marmite - I got it from everyone...just smile sweetly and mouth the words Fuck Off very slowly

Trinityrhino · 30/07/2007 21:43

sounds good marmite

off to bed now incase gecko still thinks that getting up every 2 hours in the night and THEN deciding it's morning at 4.30 is normal

i'm in Practical Parenting magazine this month, gibbon! [had TOTALLY forgotten about it emoticon]
make sure to write a suitable pro-BLW letter for next month, apparently AK thinks it's 'dangerous'. can't think what her motivation might be to say such a thing.

GibbonInARibbon · 30/07/2007 21:44

night TR

GibbonInARibbon · 30/07/2007 21:45

Are you!!!! [impressed BIG time]

Ohhh I must get a copy...will write a letter in too, is it in the shops now?

GibbonInARibbon · 30/07/2007 21:46

AK doesn't surprise me..how transparent

Aitch · 30/07/2007 21:47

do you know what, ladies, at the end of the day whether you do a mix of puree and finger food or BLW the good thing is that BLW might give you more confidence to give finger foods earlier which can only be A Good Thing.

GibbonInARibbon · 30/07/2007 21:48

Here here

marmitemad · 30/07/2007 21:55

I got Practical Parenting on Saturday (someone got me a subscription as a present [sceptical]) and I may as well read it.

Yes I thought the blw/puree article was very biased, seemed to imply that blw only consisted of fruit and vegetables. Loved the final comment from aitch though .

Aitch - Thanks for the gagging link.

Hi Peachygirl

must go to bed as well, have already been on here for nearly 2 hours (with frequent comments from dh - roll on tomorrow night when he's going to see Transformers

thanks for the helpful comments everyone.

Aitch · 30/07/2007 22:11

btw marmite, try to forget about 'getting something in'... i was saying to someone earlier that when we adults go on a diet we're told to ditch full fat milk and eat more 'rabbit food'. so that carrot puree 'going in' is more about your satisfaction than the baby's, iykwim? milk's the thing, truly.

marmitemad · 04/08/2007 12:19

well we did it, gave dd a steamed parsnip stick (saved from Thursdays dinner)yesterday at the baby group picnic. Seemed to go down quite well, she sucked on it for ages and I think she managed to swallow some as the nappy was definately different this morning .

Tried to do it discreetly with dd facing me as everyone else had their spoons and pots of puree out but as expected someone asked me what dd was eating and I got the strange looks. Also tried some steamed butternut squash which was promptly squeezed into oblivion a la play dough/toothpaste and none made it into her mouth so I think thats one to try at home.

Then we went swimming at nephews outdoor school pool where after her bottle MIL asked if I had anything for her to eat , so I produced some more parsnip which was happily chewed on again.

so all in all a resounding success .

Am excitedly planning what else to give now but am feeling a little confused about what can be raw and what needs to be cooked, off to read some more off Aitchs blog now.

oh and dd said dada for the first time this morning, thats gratitude for you!

ruddynorah · 04/08/2007 12:25

fruit is fine raw. and very portable.

Trinityrhino · 04/08/2007 12:26

well I gave gecko a piece of cooked broccoli and she loved it, not sure if any actually went in but she had a whale of a time sucking, spitting, mulching it up.

she has also had a bit of bread that she ripped off my sandwich so I eft her to it, I think a little bit actually went in

Great to hear about the broccoli, I'm not sure I'm ready for those nappies yet!

we have just had lunch of more parsnip (definately prefers steamed to roasted), butternut squash (very messy but seemed to like the colour) and attempted some pineapple (bit difficult to hold onto) as that was what we had for pudding.

Ruddy norah - thanks for the confirmation about fruit, I have bought some peaches so will try those soon and also got some very low salt rice cakes.

sorkycake · 06/08/2007 15:58

Is there anything you shouldn't be feeding ooka?

He ate a crust of pizza yesterday and I was a bit worried about that. Well...I say ate, more like sucked to within an inch of it's existence and then casually disgarded the soggy remains. He will eat fruit slices happily, but at teatime he won't have a little plate of his own, he only wants to eat from my plate.
He also had my Sundays dinner yesterday! (not all of it of course)
Do you offer food at every meal? Some days we have't given him anything except his milk. He has dropped his night feed now and I was wondering whether he needs to eat a little to make up for it?

marmitemad · 07/08/2007 20:56

sorkycake - I am taking things quite slowly here depending on what I have available and where we are, dd only had milk on Sunday but I got the impression she was missing her food playtime .

we tried melon wedges today and about 60mins later dd did a horrendous bright green, runny poo, so not sure if that was due to the melon or yesterdays pear and banana? I am quickly learning the optimum wedge size and yesterday converted a Mum at baby group onto trying blw, although I had several biddies at Rosemary Conley class telling me today that dd was too young for finger food .

Aitch · 07/08/2007 22:03
