From good to fussy eater- 8 months, help!

My ds was generally a really good eater, taking a wide range of food very well. Over the last 2 weeks he takes a few bites and then gets hysterical, making mealtimes quite frustrating all around. Switching to yogurt with fruit compote gets him to gobble down a bit more, and then hysterics again. Any ideas? His top teeth just popped out- is there a link? Just feels like such a downer when I'm spending so much time making fresh food that gets dumped, and I worry he's not getting enough.

I have the same problem with my DD, also 8 months.
She often cries hysterically only a few minutes into a meal. It happens more when she's tired, but can also happen when she seems perfectly happy and relaxed. I find the same thing about yogurt going down particularly easily too.
I have come to the conclusion that I should get as much into her as possible and then not push it too hard before giving up and BFing her. Then at least I know she's getting the nutrition she needs.
It could well be the teeth, yes.
Are you BFing or bottle feeding now? At least if your DS is drinking plenty you know he's getting enough.

Hi, my DS is just over 7 months and I am having same problem. Started weaning at around 20 weeks and he loved the food. Now he is really hit and miss. Yesterday, he hardly ate anything. He was screaming before he'd even tasted what was on offer - always seems to take fruit puree though. I was thinking it could be teeth but it is worrying and frustrating. Today I managed to get him to take his breakfast (readybrek with fruit puree) after a ropy start but lunch was a complete no no. Am dreading tea time.

My DD did this today - I wondered if she had somehow bitten herself with her bottom teeth....

This is clearly a common problem.
Hopefully it's just another one of their phases and they'll grown out of it soon.
I guess all we can do is stay patient and keep offering them food and seeing if they take it.
As long as they grown and stay happy they'll be fine.
As for the wasted food, we just have to either cope, or eat it ourselves!!

My DD did this and would only eat finger foods. I just went with the flow and went the BLW route instead. It gets messy but she actually ate more that way than from a spoon. She seems to have gotten over the phase now and will eat chicken casserole etc from a spoon but can also feed herself pretty much anything. It was a good learning experience for her. She is 10m.

Oh and yes she would still eat yoghurt from a spoon!

Thanks everyone- the last few meals have been better, probably as I've relaxed and he's picked up on it. Think it is probably teething combined with a desire to do more on his own so upping the fingers foods as possible. Also I may have forgotten the key mama mantra- this too shall pass! : )
