What was the first food you introduced?

We will be starting weaning in about months time when DS is 6 months old. I've been reading lists of what you can give at 6 months, recommendations to start with non-sweet veg before sweet stuff and to introduce high allergenic foods early. It sounds like baby rice has little nutritional value, is there even any point giving it? What food did you introduce first and was it puree, mash of finger food? The guidance we got from HV said to introduce new foods every 4 days to spot allergies, did you do this?

We just gave dd whatever we were eating. Her first meal was a roast dinner. No mush. No puree.

No point to baby rice at all.

"The guidance we got from HV said to introduce new foods every 4 days to spot allergies, did you do this?"

If anyone actually do this it would take them about a million years to get to the point of actually eating a normal meal.

I gave fortified cereal plus veg and fruit purees, cooked egg yolk, nut butters mixed into the cereal for the first two weeks (at 4.5 months), then from 5mo added mashed fish and meat puree, plus bits and pieces of what we were eating as long as was soft enough to eat without teeth and it contained virtually no salt.

From 6mo, she eats most table foods either whole or mashed, but continues her meat purees and fortified cereal as well for nutrition. I also puree some vegetables like spinach which otherwise she would have difficulty eating without any teeth. I make sure she gets allergenic foods (shrimp, egg, nut butters etc.) regularly as this is now recommended.

Avocado

TanteRose · 28/06/2019 05:36

banana

I was eating one and she was looking at it like it was the most amazing thing she'd ever seen, so I just reached across and offered it to her! Never looked back - she would eat anything we did, she still loves her food (she's 21 now, 5'8", and gorgeous!) Smile

HappyPunky · 28/06/2019 05:53

I gave avocado in slices and steamed carrot sticks then gave DD what I was having.

I modified my cooking a bit so I cut any vegetables into strips or chip shape and I added my salt and chilli on to my plate afterwards. I bought some grinders with different spices in them like the peri peri ones.

I used to give her melon sticks. She seemed to enjoy them straight out of the fridge in hot weather because she was teething.

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 01/07/2019 08:21

Cucumber. First proper meal was a curry, eaten with his hands.

BillywilliamV · 01/07/2019 08:23

Mango..my two yo refused to eat it so I warned..“I’ll feed it to your sister!” and then I did.
Wouldn’t recommend this tag!

Cuppa12345 · 01/07/2019 08:37

Banana, mashed up with a spoon. I followed the Ella kitchen first foods book for the first few months as I was so fearful off choking (unnecessarily). I moved slowly to finger foods over the next 2 months and then by 10 months she was eating whatever we ate with a few spoon fed bits that she couldn't pick up like lentil curry

DrDiva · 01/07/2019 08:40

Carrot purée - DS was prem so we weaned before his pincer grip was good enough to hold stuff. He thought it was the best thing ever. And it hasn’t kept him from becoming a walking garbage can!

FenellaMaxwell · 01/07/2019 08:42

Cucumber and broccoli, I think? Then the next day he snatched a piece of bread dipped in guacamole loaded with chillies and garlic from DH and devoured it, so after that he just had ordinary food without salt added. He still loves chilli and garlic though!

isittheholidaysyet · 01/07/2019 08:45

Dc1 (4 months old) baby rice, (don't bother) then carrot, then other veges slowly, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, Apple, pear, parsnip sweet potato

DC2 (5 1/2 months) skipped baby rice, actually started on jars as we were on holiday, carrot then Apple and pear. Quickly moved on to all the other pureed fruit and veg.

Dc 3 and 4 (6 months) a few weeks of various pureed veg, quickly introduced cheese mixed into the puree. Then very so I whatever veg we were having pureed.
Then our meals (when suitable) pureed or mashed with the veg or pasta as finger food.

Don't bother with baby rice. Especially at 6 months.

My DD has just started on solids recently and she had porridge which she loved! And then after a few days puréed carrot, swede and potato. Few days after that she had bits of fruit and other veg. My MIL is still adamant she should have been weaned (3 months ago) on rusks and baby rice but I've had no desire to give her either!

Orangedaisy · 01/07/2019 21:03

Carrot or banana. Cheap and requires very little prep so when it’s refused/smeared everywhere it’s less soul destroying.

LoisLittsLover · 01/07/2019 21:04

Brocolli as a finger food

firstimemamma · 01/07/2019 21:08

Banana mashed up with a little breast milk. Same again following day.

Rest of the first week was simple purées on a 2-day cycle.

After first week it became a new thing each day and starting to experiment with food combinations and seasoning.

starfishcoffee · 01/07/2019 21:09

I did start with baby rice (as I thought it's a gentle start for his stomach), but we quickly moved on to finger foods and sweet potato, avocado etc.

I did a mixture of BLW and purees. For instance he'd have baby porridge for breakfast with banana/raspberries mushed in. Lunch would be all finger foods, avocado, cheese, chicken, those organix crisps things and then dinner would usually be a load of vegetables all mashed up. DS is 13 months now and is a real foodie. He will eat anything and never seems to be full. Confused

PerfectPeony2 · 01/07/2019 21:13

We mostly gave DD what we were eating and adapted it slightly. I hate baby food! She’s a great eater at 11 months because of it and hates anything bland Smile. She’ll take some food off a spoon but only stuff like yogurt/ porridge.

If you decide to do blw there’s a Facebook group called ‘baby led weaning for beginners and beyond’. Really helped me with good advice on hazards etc. and gave me confidence to try new things.

thismeansnothing · 01/07/2019 21:21

DD got whatever we had. Her first food was the end of my toast crust as she took it before I'd actually planned to do some weaning. But first proper day she had a couple of spoons of berry porridge, some hummus, and a tiny bit of sausage casserole. I totally winged it. She's 7 now and will eat anything n everything

Indecisivelurcher · 01/07/2019 21:42

Technically, mince pie. Oopsie!!! Then apple!! She just kept fastening her teeth into things I was eating! Did baby led weaning with both and would heartily recommend it. Just give them what you're having. In big chucks to pick up. And remember the mantra, food is for fun until you're one.

Indecisivelurcher · 01/07/2019 21:43

You don't need to wait until bang on 6 months either, if dc is interested and ready a few weeks early then go with it.

Kay1341 · 05/07/2019 15:09

Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful.

Baby rice, then a dab of peanut butter on lips , 3 days layer dab on tounge and spoon mixed in rice. After a week same procedure with all nut butters. Unsweetened unsalted ones.
Next puree pumpkin/sweet potato, carrot/ parsnip Swede in that order. First mixed with a bit of baby rice like a fruit corner yogurt then just alone. Moved on to pureed greens mixed with the root veg half and half then neat. Eventually some fruits. Then some fish finally meat. Baby ate absolutely everything by 1 excluding honey which isn't allowed until 2 years. Still does. Didn't give sweet foods out of prefence as first foods so as not to encourage a sweet tooth over savoury prefernce.

louisevh2 · 08/07/2019 15:15

I began weaning my son with baby rice, but that was because he was younger than 6 months (was advised to wean earlier). After 6 months, you can start with finger foods, lets the baby explore and go at their own pace.

Hotterthanahotthing · 08/07/2019 15:34

Puree was recemded when DD was weaning.
Tried baby rice ,it's amazing how far it can be spit!Moved on to banana, she was happy with that just mashed after a few days.I pureed and veg we had(pureed sprouts don't,just don't,)and put it in icecube trays so in handy small servings and will have defrosted by the time you need them if out and about.
She only dad a few spoonfuls each meal and then milk.
She was soon eating bread and butter cut into slices,,apple slices when teething, grated cheese. We have her as much colour and variety as we could.
She was very good at trying everything.
We didn't eat the same meals because my ex liked spice, salt etc in his food but we did eat together and she tried things from my plate. She liked a roast but not the meat and loved Yorkshire pud.
At 9 months she discovered carrot and corriander soup,I gave her s taste when we were out and she ate all of it leaving me to munch on the bread roll.
The only thing she didn't like was hot(spices)food but she started to enjoy this a about 12,and likes her food hotter than me now.

RockinHippy · 08/07/2019 16:12

Banana, though it needs to be a tiny bit to begin with.

DD grabbed my own banana & stuffed the mush she made I her mouth before I even realised what was happening. She basically ate too much & it gave he really bad colic
