tried both purees (carrot) and finger food (toast) and she pushed all of it out of her mouth. the toast she chewed a bit but then spat it all out, the puree she pushed out of her mouth and then clamped it firmly shut, so i couldn't give her any more!
should i just give up for a bit? she must be hungry tho - she's exc breastfed but she wants feeding every hour or so cos she's starving! thought she'd love solids...

You'll get there, daisy. Some babies take more quickly to weaning than others. As long as she's still getting milk, there's no huge rush.

You could try some finger foods, as opposed to the purees. My ds (as an example) didn't like pureed food from day one.

Try something different tomorrow. Perhaps a nice ripe piece of banana, try mashing it if you are worried but if you think she will be ok split it into the 3 natural segments (less slippery than cutting it) and hand her some small pieces. Put a few on her tray and sit back and wait.

Also think about what time of day you were trying to feed her. I had to leave a good hour after her milk before offering "lunch".

Mine just blew raspberries out for a few weeks only really started eating at 7.5 months and even then we have weeks when she doesn't eat much. Give it time.

Is she pushing the food out with her tongue? If so then that sounds like she may still have her tongue thrust reflex so I would be inclined to wait a week or so & try again. The tongue thrust reflex is present from birth until roughly 4-6 months & its designed to protect the airway from foreign objects, food etc that the baby isn't yet capable of moving round the mouth, chewing etc & therefore usually an indicator that they aren't quite ready for solids yet.

Not every baby will be ready at 6 months on the dot - my DS wasnt ready until nearer 7 months as he didn't sit unaided until then.

Try a nice creamy porridge.

daisybo · 25/07/2007 10:11

well tried porridge and banana this morning. both she just spat out again.
i guess she's just not ready yet, she must be hungry tho as i'm feeding her every hour and a half or so all day ......

Early solids have very little to do with satisfying hunger IMO. That's what milk is for. Solids are more about exploring new tastes & textures etc. Doesn't make you feel much better I know re the frequent feeding ...but it does get better eventually....repeat the mummy mantra "This too shall pass..." "This too shall pass"

well just see how she goes for now.......dont forget she is filling herself up on milk every hour and half.....if she keeps refusing the next week or so then dont give her any milk when she WANTS it, i had the same problem with dd when she was weaning so hv told me to give her nothing but cool boiled water in the morning and throughout until she had something to ear.i didnt do this i just cut her milk intake down and it worked

Lo 6 months 2 weeks opens his mouth when the spoon approaches then just sits with his mouth open, no chewing or anything. Eventually some dribbles out and some, presumably gets swallowed.

I tried him with a stalk of cauliflower on Sunday and although he managed to pick it up he couldn't get it to hit his mouth.

Mind you he did manage to roll over by himself yesterday

daisybo · 25/07/2007 16:33

thanks guys feel a bit better knowing i'm not the only one
when i weaned ds 3 yrs ago advice was to wean at 17 weeks and he wolfed it down straight away no probs, so wasn't expecting this!
we were having pasta at lunch and she was moaning so i put a piece of plain pasta on her tray and she gave it a good old chew, she didn't swallow any but at least she didn't look like i was trying to poison her!

I take back what I said about the tongue thrust - tbh from your last post it just sounds like she wants to explore the food herself, & not be spoon fed. A lot of mums who do baby led weaning (BLW) find that their babies tend to just chew on things at first & take a while to actually swallow anything....she will eat when she wants to & you will soon be doing a little dance when you find some food in her nappy.....closely followed by a desire to go back to excl bfing coz they are so 'orrible

weezy292004 · 25/07/2007 21:53

lo i look after did this for nearly 2 weeks and we just kept offering her 1 taste of solid a day, then all of a sudden it just clicked and she went straight onto 3 meals a day of about 5 cubes of veg/fruit.
we tried ricecakes as a finger food but she just chokes on them and also nearly all the children i've weaned (and it's been alot after 15yrs of nannying)have always hated carrot on it's own.Butternut squash, sweet potato and mango has always been a big hit.
good luck
