How much do you give?

My DD is now 9 months....

Weaned at 6 months and still breastfed...but I feel like I have no idea if I'm giving her enough/ too much food. She does still prefer Breastmilk over anything but is on the whole a happy eater...

Typical day food/drink wise. Everything is home cooked.

Breakfast: porridge oats and pear or apple purée...will have 3 tablespoons on average
Water

Lunch: vegetable purée - carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato mix etc...about 2 ice cubes....
Grated cheese
water

Snacks/ celery sticks as she's teething. Loves to chew on them...

Dinner: roast chicken and carrot purée...
Greek Yogurt
Water

Plus 6/8 breastfeeds a day.

Do feel a bit lost with what other foods to give. She does have big poops - 1/2 a day sometimes to every other day.

That sounds mostly fine, though I'd be moving away from purees now for main meals. I would be offering as much as she wants until she loses interest (or mealtime is over and you need to clean up). You don't need to limit food as long as you feed on demand as much as they want. I'd start moving towards offering the normal foods you eat in your family though.

dementedpixie · 01/05/2019 12:31

Do you give finger foods/ non pureed foods? At 9 months you should be starting to move away from puree

Jennyfirsttimemum · 01/05/2019 13:40

I do offer steamed veg as finger foods - broccoli, carrot sticks and celery.

I'm just worried about her choking on the lumpier foods. She has two bottom teeth but that's it so far.

Any foods been a success for you?

Many thanks for your replies x

It sounds like you are doing great! Weaning can be such a mine field.

I find things like corn pancakes are good.
Handful (frozen) corn/pea/spinach/whatever (blitzed in food processor to make crumb if you're nervous of too many lumps)
Couple of tablespoons flour
Egg
Milk to loosen if needed

Also the Annabel Karmel meatballs are a huge success with us.

Melted cheddar on toast - under grill.

You'd be surprised how strong their gums are. I was so nervous about choking etc. But we just dived in and now it's great.

How about toast, eggy bread, scrambled eggs, homemade savoury muffins, hummus/baba ganoush on toast or veg sticks, slow cooked meats? My DS2 is 7 months, no teeth as yet and he can have a good go at those foods. I don't puree anything but do spoon feed him sloppy stuff eg yoghurt, porridge, weetabix etc. We mostly give him what we eat and just not the bits that are unsuitable (contain honey, too spicy or salty etc). I have some of the savoury muffins in the freezer for taking out and when we eat something he's not allowed.

@tappitytaptap
Hi. Any chance you could give the recipe for your homemade muffins? Are they easy to make?

sugartitz · 06/05/2019 07:57

Babies don't need teeth to chew. You use your back teeth to chew and they don't come in until a lot later which by that point, it can be difficult to encourage children to eat solids. We did baby led weaning so at six
Months, my children all had family foods. I think their first food was pasta! Omelette cut into fingers is a good one and you can get veg into it, fingers of toast (easier to eat than bread because bread can go 'claggy'), veg sticks, pasta, Yorkshire puddings, fish fingers, sweet potato chips, chicken strips.

fudesina · 06/05/2019 09:19

At this age they can eat family food, just cut it up small.

Mine loved jacket potatoes with beans, cheese, tuna mayo. Rice with chicken, peas, sweet corn. Roast dinners, pasta with creamy sauce, fish anything basically!

fudesina · 06/05/2019 09:20

Just don't add salt

Jennyfirsttimemum · 06/05/2019 13:09

These are great suggestions. Thank you all.
Served some soft pasta shells for dinner last night for DD - she really liked them! Toast fingers were a bit of a hit too.

Would love to get the recipe for the homemade muffins please.

Any other suggestions... be fab!

It is a bit of a mine field for first time mum!

X

@Everybodywantstobeacat123
Yes pretty easy! I'm sat under a feeding baby at the moment but there are a couple of good ones in the 'baby led weaning cookbook' and the baby led weaning app (pink background) also has them - do you have that app? Will see if I can google a recipe

tappitytaptap · 06/05/2019 17:36

Here you go! I'd maybe reduce cayenne slightly in 1st batch as they are reasonably spicy, my DS aged 3 likes spice but I put a bit less in for my 7 month old.

Everybodywantstobeacat123 · 06/05/2019 18:43

No I don't have it ill have a look. Thank you they look lovely I'm sure my DS will love them!
