BLW confession! Advice needed!

My ds is 22 weeks old and has just got his high chair- he seems to really like it and sits up in it really well so I am dead pleased (as he is hard to please- he normally gets bored after 2 mins in his bumbo or on the playmat). Anyway, confession time I gave him some cucumber from my plate at the weekend just to see what he did (duh, guess what? straight in his mouth) so I just watched him and he sucked on it with some gusto and then launched it on the floor. Since then I have given him a sprig of broccolli and he has tried some peach and he has sucked on all of them and discarded them when he didnt want anymore. He has only had a piece a day and I havent fed him with it, just popped them on the tray whilst I eat.

But I have just read my HV weaning notes and guilt has set in as I know the advice is to wait to 26 weeks. He still has another four weeks to go- Shall I carry on or as he is not needing food yet, stop giving him bits and bobs? Am I doing him any harm? It just felt like a natural thing to do at the time...

PS Also- anyone any advice on BLW and nursery? He starts it in two weeks and I mentioned BLW with them today and it seemed to throw them a little. They are very much in to healthy eating, have won awards for promoting this and make fully organic food in house so I thought it would be familiar to them- How is best to explain it?

the great thing about BLW like this is they start when they're ready - if he can sit up, pick up food and get it to his mouth chances are his gut is developed enough to handle it.

maybe don't call it 'BLW' at nursery - say 'straight to finger food' and get them to feed him off the toddler menu

loolop · 16/07/2007 21:50

Sorry to hijack JoJo but have been wondering for a while what's BLW??

MrsBadger · 16/07/2007 21:52

baby-led weaning - good blog about it here

Quiddaitch · 16/07/2007 22:10

agree with mrsb, jojosmaman. the thinking is that if they're not ready they can't pick it up and eat it anyway.

jojosmaman · 16/07/2007 22:25

Thanks for that- I've resisted putting them in his hand when he is struggling to pick them up (as they are slippy those pesky cucumbers) as I thought this might be the case. So I think I'll just carry on as I am and see how he gets on as there have been no or as yet!

And I'll try the 'straight to finger food' description with the nursery, this will hopefully make sense to them, thanks mrsbadger

well I reckon that ds3 (14 weeks) is ready now. I recognise the signs from my others at this age. When he's really grumbly in the early evenings my instinct is to give him food other than bm.
Go with what you feel is right. Your baby will let you know if you're doing the right thing.

Aitch · 16/07/2007 22:49

kitty the thing about blw is that they have to feed themselves, so to be ready at 13 weeks would be remarkable under those circumstances. jojosmaman, there's a section on the blog about nurseries etc, you could see if any of the comments are helpful.

Aitch · 16/07/2007 22:49

14 weeks, sorry. might it not be the four month growth spurt?

kittywits · 17/07/2007 07:25

Oh I see, thanks for explaining the technicalities Aitch
Is there a 14 week growth spurt? Ds3 seems to want to feed or whinge all day long . I call him laughing boy

Aitch · 17/07/2007 09:53

lol. i've seen on here that it's VERY common to have a four-month growth spurt so perhaps laughing boy's just a leetle advanced?

loolop · 17/07/2007 18:09

thanks MrsB!

slinkyjo · 17/07/2007 18:12

i must be really bad then as i started weaning my two at 16wks old

Aitch · 17/07/2007 20:04

who says you're bad?

Reesie · 17/07/2007 21:16

My lo was sitting upright on her own and eating toys by 23 weeks. I sat her in a highchair and gave her some veg from my plate to see what she would do. Of course it went straight in her mouth and I started seeing some of the food travelling to her nappy from about 24 weeks. I stuck with plain veg and fruit until 26 weeks and now at 29 weeks she eats with absolute gusto - she polished off half a cauli (as cauliflower cheese) with veg last night . I suppose that is the essence of BLW - they will do what they want to and what they feel ready for.

Aitch · 17/07/2007 22:05

precisely, reesie

kittywits · 19/07/2007 17:18

Well 14 week old ds3 is now very happily 'chewing' on bits of bread. Infact this is the first time since his birth that anything apart from boob will stop him screaming

lulumama · 19/07/2007 17:20

i didn;t think gluten / wheat was ok for under 6 months? might be wrong...

Aitch · 19/07/2007 17:22

i'd maybe steer clear of the bread until 6 months, kitty. but otherwise that is blooming Amazing! it is really quite early, though, even the old guidelines were for 16 weeks... are you sure that more milk wouldn't do?

lulumama · 19/07/2007 17:26

also, just to concur with my learned friend, aitch, there is often a growth spurt around this time, 14 - 16 weeks.....it will pass....

mellow2 · 19/07/2007 17:41

Really sorry to hijack your thread.

Aitch,

Do you know anyone who knows lisad123 in RL? I'm trying to get hold of her as I need to have her decision about the baby hammock and I can't get hold of her by e-mail.

Sorry again.

kittywits · 19/07/2007 18:22

I'd say 99.999999 % of his diet is still milk. I don't think he actually eats any bread, just likes the taste!!

Aitch · 19/07/2007 20:21

misdee and sparklygothcat are her sisters, you should see if they're around. i'm guessing, tbh, that what with peter's health and everything they're a bit distracted at the mo.
