Mixed weaning ok?

We have a 7 1/2 month old. We were planning on following the NHS mixed weaning advice we got at a class we went to; basically mash + finger food.

However after a 'choking' incident (on reflection, just a cough and spat out a bit of carrot), my wife has said she can't feed anything but purée at lunch time while I'm away. On the other hand, I've been in charge of tea time and have been doing BLW. DS has an absolute whale of a time and eats anything I give him. It's been mind blowing to see his coordination get do much better in a few weeks.

Is this ok? DS gets a puréed lunch and a hands-on evening meal? I don't want to cause confusion for the little guy.

I think a mixture of textures is fine especially if you load a spoon with puree and let them use it.
As a different issue, is your wife OK? My anxiety couldn't cope with any risk of choking and although I know that coughing means they aren't choking both my children do an "I'm OK" thing that shows I struggled with normal gagging.

There is no best way really other than what works for you and your baby. BLW is a bit of a fad IMO. I fed one DC mainly puree with a bit of finger food and had one who ate what we were having - mushed up if it were sloppy like shepherds pie or something or just given as finger foods if it was roast dinner etc.

It sounds as if what you're doing works for you and makes your baby happy and he is getting a variety of tastes and textures. My second DC has ended up a very fussy eater even though she ate everything under the sun as a baby, so there are no guarantees whatever you do!

AlunWynsKnee my wife is ok thank you yes,
she is able to stay in the same room while he's eating again - we're both super anxious parents 😣

DippyAvocado - agree it's got to be something that works, I suppose that's what we're doing when you put it like that. We're both a bit intimidated by the BLW movement, I'm not being critical in the slightest but there's definitely a competitive, Instagram element to it!

Thank you

It’s absolutely fine. Maybe your wife would be able to give some finger foods that are highly unlikely to cause a choke (eg Ella’s Kitchen puffs) so the baby keeps their hands out the spoon fed food?

My mums equally anxious so it’s the sort of thing she gives while feeding DS2. Banana’s another good one.
