Baby gagging

My DS has started weaning and if he doesn’t like something or gags too much he makes himself sick

Is this normal?

Mine went through that stage. Not because he disliked the food - he just choked and struggled to eat it. Until he was about 9 months old anything other than purée made him gag.

Gagging is a normal reflex as they learn to eat solids, whether they are spoon-fed or you're doing BLW. More often than not, what looks worrying to us is just your baby getting used to the feel of food in his mouth, and what to do with it. Now he needs to learn to use his tongue to move food from the front of his mouth to the back, so he can swallow it. As he masters this, and as you make food more lumpy it’s likely that he’ll gag from time to time. Gagging brings food forward into his mouth so he can chew it some more first or try to swallow a smaller amount.
Babies pick up on your anxiety so, hard as it is, try to stay calm if he gags. Give a gentle pat on the back or sip of water, as well as a reassuring smile, rather than leaping into action at the slightest cough. Try to make sure you’re not putting too much on the spoon.

He should gag less often as he develops and learns to regulate the amount of food he swallows.
