Is this enough food for 12 month old ?

lifeof · 21/01/2019 20:30

Today was a fairly typical day
Breakfast was porridge (1 scoop of the heinz one) with alpro 1+ milk (2oz)
3 slices of banana
Lunch was an ella parsnip pouch
2 slices of cucumber
Dinner some pureed squash carrot and chicken and 1 broccoli floret
An almond milk yogurt tube
He has water with meals and is breastfed a lot we don’t seem to be able to cut down so rather than dropping feeds I was thinking I need to increase food and maybe add snacks ? Refusing a feed just causes huge upset
Dairy doesn’t agree with him

It seems very light to me. Not much protein...could you offer him some cheese at lunch or eggs? That would fill him up more.

LunaLovesgood · 21/01/2019 21:33

By 12 months DD was having a bowl of cereal (weetabix mainly) with a quarter or two of toast and some fruit for breakfast.

Lunch was anything from a small portion of chilli and rice to an omelette with fruit for pudding if she fancied it.

Tea at about 4 of pasta, stir fry etc

She had a bottle of full fat milk when she woke up, one at nap time after lunch and one before bed.

Your menu doesn't sound like much to me but to be fair DD didn't, and still doesn't, eat everything offered. I wanted her to learn portion control and hunger naturally by choosing how much of what she eats.

We've never done snacks either cone to think of it, unless it's something small after nursery now.

Topsyloulou · 21/01/2019 21:33

That doesn't seem like a lot of food. My dd is 14 months & has a very healthy appetite. Today she has had;
1 Weetabix with cows milk
1 banana
Small bowl of cornflakes & milk at nursery
Fruit snack
Chilli & rice
Yoghurt
Fruit snack
1/2 jacket potato with cheese
Fruit bake
1/2 box raisins
Cheese string

That's a pretty typical day at the moment as she's having another growth spurt. She's a bit hit & miss with her water consumption although will happily drink ds' squash if it's in reach. She has a small cup of cows milk mid morning & another one before bed.

I'd definitely up the food & in particular the protein & calcium. You shouldn't need to purée now either. I just put things on the high chair table & she feeds herself. Are you giving food before or after a milk feed?

Hi OP, if you're worried about quantities or variety, have a read of this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust.

It gives sample menus and portion sizes Smile

lifeof · 21/01/2019 22:46

He has breastfeeds approx at these times
6 am
930am
After morning nap around 1045/11
Mid aft
Then after dinner and a lot in evening and night

He doesn’t have any teeth yet and has reflux so is bad with anything too lumpy although is def improving
I’m quite tired with the bf he will drink a little of the alpro but not much
He used to always vomit a lot after dairy or formula so a bit unsure if that was reflux or allergy
He has chickpeas and lentils and meat a lot and is on iron medication

That doesn’t seem like much really ? Is your lo looking for more?

My ten month old had today -

One weetabix
Half banana
Few Cheerios ( her sister gave her )

Pesto pasta
Grated cheese
Yogurt

Corn cake- half
Grapes / half banana

Spaghetti bolognaise

She takes 4 bottles during the day and one at night

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/01/2019 22:51

If he's vomiting after dairy, are you DF and have you seen a GP? Smile

Shelley54 · 22/01/2019 09:05

My 8m old DS is eating more than you listed - so to me it doesn’t seem enough.

For example breakfast this morning was Ella’s porridge (3tbsp with 2ozs milk), a rice cake and a banana chopped up in a bowl. He didn’t eat all the banana but it all got sucked and some was eaten.

Lunch will be a jar - prob spag bol - with a fromage frais. Dinner will be eggy bread - a slice, which again will all be sucked but probably only half eaten - and perhaps a baby biscuit.

sar302 · 22/01/2019 09:32

Our little boy didn't increase his food or water intake until we drastically reduced his milk intake at 12.5 months. We had similar issues in that he was very late teething, and he's allergic to egg. He was still having four bottles of formula a day until he was gone 12 months.

One day we just cut out two bottles, and basically fed him every two hours that he was awake. Once he was eating more food, he hasn't wanted to go back to the milk. But the milk and to go first.

Even without teeth, they can break down toast and rice crackers. And any normal food can be puréed a bit to make it easier.

The milk is the easy and comforting option. Whilst it's there, he's unlikely to opt for food, especially if eating is tricky. Good luck x

Twickerhun · 22/01/2019 09:40

Sounds about what my DS would eat but I would have some egg or cheese in there too, and fairly regular meals of small portion lasagne or cottage pie etc.

Jackshouse · 22/01/2019 10:19

Is there a particular reason why you are using formula and giving pouches of single veg?

In porridge full fat milk is fine from 6 months. I would just be giving regular porridge and non salty adult food. Just like adults I would expect a toddler to have 3 balanced meals a days but then unlike adults I would expect to give 3 snacks too.

Jackshouse · 22/01/2019 10:21

Just read that you are advoiding dairy so use either oatly barista or alpro growing up milk in porridge. My DD is dairy free too. Have you sought medical advice over this?

Babies have teeth they are just under their gums meaning they can still chew.

Bumblebee39 · 22/01/2019 11:19

At 12 months DC1 had 3-4 breastfeeds and DC2 had 3-4 bottle feeds (morning, nap 1, nap 2 if they had a second nap, bedtime)

I cut down the time to to 20 mins for a breastfeed max or a 5oz bottle

InDubiousBattle · 22/01/2019 11:26

At one I would replace the mid morning and afternoon milk with snacks instead. Have you seen a gp about the vomiting /dairy issues?

Her0utdoors · 22/01/2019 11:33

One of my children ate loads at that age, the other one would have eaten half of that on a good day. Both bf on demand. He's only just getting stuck into decent meals at nearly two. If your ds is following his line in the red book and developing normally, I wouldn't worry.

Tinkerbell89 · 22/01/2019 11:56

At 12 month's ours were eating a smaller version of our meals: breakfast toast or cereal, whole bananna, yoghurt. Lunch wraps with humous, cheese, crisps, fruit (orange), ham. Tea: several vegetables, meat, yoghurt. They'd eat lasagne, fish cakes, chips, pie. Lots of smiles versions of our meal with a yoghurt for pudding or a piece of cake. Some days eating more others left. If they leave food it can mean they've had enough. I think your meals are sounding a bit too small and could do with more with milk cut back. If not sure speak with your friends or a HV. All kids are different and some don't eat as well as others

Wallsbangers · 22/01/2019 13:18

Today's menu is:
7 Oz bottle
Tangerine
Porridge bar (made with banana and blueberries)
Shredded wheat
1/2 slice of toast

Cheese wrap
Tomato's
Carrot

Rice cake/ baby biscuits mid afternoon

Fish stew with mash for dinner
Maybe a yogurt

7oz bottle before bed.

He's 12 months.

lifeof · 22/01/2019 17:14

Yes it’s the alpro growing up that he’s having
The gp gave ranitidine to try and said to try dairy again in a few weeks and see what happens.

The parsnip pouch is 58kcal - so with the cucumber, his lunch was probably around 70kcal. A digestive biscuit is more. A slice of bread is more. So he’s having milk because he’s not getting his calories from food.

A very simple change might be to add a bananas and coconut pouch for ‘pudding’ - one Of those adds 178kcal and it’s still smooth.

Essentially you need him taking more energy from food, although I appreciate it’s difficult.

lifeof · 22/01/2019 20:50

I mixed some almond yogurt into a mashed banana today he loved that and the yogurt was 85 calories and not much ‘volume’
Took him AGES to eat as I did it a little lumper and he really struggled

I’ll get some of those pouches they sound good thanks

CosmicComet · 22/01/2019 21:03

My 1yo has had half a slice of toast and 2tbs yogurt with fruit, half a potato waffle with 2tbs beans, half a banana, and a tiny slice of pork with squash and potato followed by a treat 1square of chocolate.

He isn’t a big eater. I offer him larger portions but that’s all he eats. The rest of the food on his plate gets binned. He certainly wouldn’t eat a whole banana or a whole slice of toast. And I most definitely would NOT be encouraging three snacks a day between meals!

Lindorballs · 22/01/2019 21:14

I wouldn’t say that’s loads. My nearly 14 month old has imo quite a small appetite and is quite fussy - compared to my first child who would eat anything - and he eats more than this.
Typical day:
Breakfast - bowl of porridge made with jumbo oats same as rest of the family. He eats around the equivalent of half of one of those microwave porridge sachets. With about a third of a fruit pouch squeezed into it. Followed by half a small piece of toast with eg jam or peanut butter
Lunch - eg pasta with bolognese. Will typically eat around 20-30g pasta with about 4-5 tablespoons bolognese followed by a medium yoghurt pot for pudding
Tea eg one piece of eggy bread with a couple of table spoons of beans or one small sandwich - often gets chucked around and not eaten.
He had a small bottle of whole milk first thing and a big bottle at bedtime. Approx 300ml milk total.
I don’t purée food or give him pouches anymore either (apart from on his breakfast). I don’t think pouches are as filling as homemade food. I usually just chop up whatever we’re having into small pieces. He only has 6 teeth. Seems to manage ok.
I’d like him to eat more tbh. He’s only 25th Centile having been born on the 91st and sometimes still wakes for milk in the night.
So in short no I don’t think your baby is eating much but he will still be getting much of the nutrition he needs from milk so don’t panic!

BlueWonder · 22/01/2019 21:16

This sounds more like food for a 6-8 month old, if that. What does your HV say?
