Milk and one year old

So he normally has about 5/6 in the morn and then about 4/5 after nap abput 5.30 and sometimes 2/3 when he goes to sleep. He also has 3 in porridge. However, sometimes he doesn’t fancy it when he wakes from nap. He had 8 today and my boyfriend thinks he’s having too much in morning and he may not get enough food. I think he’s having plenty and he’s just having a hungry day in general as normally he’d have six and he didn’t have much milk yesterday. What sort of times do you give milk and how much. I’m wondering whether I should do more little and often

Start offering water sometimes, he might just be thirsty.

rubyroot · 17/01/2019 18:15

Thanks, but my question was not about water (which he gulps loads of). I was asking about milk!

How many months is he, I'm assuming closer to 1 than 2? You could probably drop the late afternoon one and just give him a bottle before bed.

rubyroot · 17/01/2019 18:24

He’s just turned one

He seems to like milk when he wakes. We don’t do snacks as we tried doing them and he just stopped eating as much at mealtimes

He needs about 300 ml of full fat cow's milk each day which is roughly 10 floz. There's some more information in this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust.

If he only has 8floz some days, you should make sure he has high calcium foods and some extra fats like olive oil or oily fish. Smile

rubyroot · 18/01/2019 17:50

Thanks @JiltedJohnsJulie I meant he had 8 (not the whole day) in the morning, so he still had 3 in his porridge and then a further 5 in the afternoon. What my boyfriend was saying is that we should only give him 5/6 in the morning as first feed as may mean he gets hungrier food during the day- though his food intake seems fine at the moment. He also has yoghurt and often cheese in the day too.

Sorry I misunderstood, I thought you meant the whole day.

I'd agree with your BF too. I'd give him a small cup of milk with his breakfast.

He doesn't have to have 3 floz in his cereal either. It's fine to try him with some other breakfast foods. He might like a blueberry pancake, toast with smooth nut butter, toast with smushed avocado, scrambled egg with cut up cherry tomatoes or a cinnamon bagel toasted and spread with butter.

So if he has a couple of ounces on a cup with breakfast, 2 or 3 before nap and 4 or 5 on waking that should be enough. Smile

Does he get anymore milk at bedtime or in the night?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/01/2019 18:45

Sorry didn't mean to sound like I was taking your BFs side, just wanted to say he might have a point about upping his food intake now he's one Smile

Jackshouse · 18/01/2019 18:46

If you are currently using a bottle then try switching to a cup of milk and giving it with food for breakfast.

rubyroot · 18/01/2019 19:30

No doesn’t sound like your taking his side, it was a conversation we had and I wondered what mumsnwtters thought. I do like giving him reddy brek in the morning as it’s fortified with vits and he won’t have the liquid stuff- yes I know I need to order the drops as will be easier to get down him. Sometimes he has 3 before bed but rarely wants milk before bed as he has a substantial dinner. Thanks for the breakfast sugfestions- we’ve done pancakes before and full cooked English too.

He’s not on bottles, he drinks using a straw cup as a transition to a proper cup

How have you got on today @rubyroot? Smile

rubyroot · 19/01/2019 20:24

Well today he’s drank about 10 oz of milk, and had 3 in reddy brek. He’s had 5 dessertspoons if dry reddy brek, a soft boiled egg with soldiers- ate two thirds of a slice of granary- usually eats a slice. Half a pear, spaghetti Bolognese (30g of dried spaghetti and about 4 tablespoons of Bolognese and just seeing if he wants banana for afters. Does that sound about right for a one year old?

OP posts:
rubyroot · 19/01/2019 20:25

Oh- and half an avocado with his Bolognese

OP posts:
rubyroot · 19/01/2019 20:29

Yes he had half a banana for pud. And he also had quarter of a mango for breakfast with his porridge

With little ones you need to look at what they eat over a week as one day they won’t stop eating and the next day they have nothing.

rubyroot · 19/01/2019 20:44

He’s pretty consistent at the most moment and I know it’s abput the week of course. Today was a typical day really. Yesterday he had similar and stew dumpling and mashed potato for dinner

My DS (16 months) today had;

Shredded wheat bite size - 7am

7oz milk mixed with vitamins - 9am

Pizza slice from bakery for lunch
Half a gingerbread man
(Not an everyday lunch 🙈)

Meatballs with suede and carrots - 6pm
Yeo valley fromage frais and blueberries

8oz milk before bed - 8pm

Jackshouse · 19/01/2019 21:20

As long as he is getting 350mg of calcium a day, his vitamins and is putting on weight inline with his curve them don’t worry too much amount of food that goes in.

rubyroot · 20/01/2019 11:08

Thanks @Pommes. Well he was following 75th percentile perfectly, but his head his massive so I am sure that makes up most of his weight Grin. Don't really know if he is still following percentile as he was weighed about 2 1/2 months ago. All I know is he's getting bloody heavy!

There's a good way to work put calcium in this guide from the BDA.

The guide I posted further up is worth a read too Smile

rubyroot · 21/01/2019 23:21

Thanks for the guides @JiltedJohnsJulie
