Semi skimmed milk

Have been weaning for a while, baby nearly 7 months, have been using formula or water in breakfasts such as porridge etc and know that you can use cows milk in food from 6 months but was just wondering if you can use semi skimmed milk ?

TIA

Don't see why not!

You can give cows milk with porridge or cereal now, although I think whole/full fat is recommended over semi skimmed- I’m sure I read that they need the fats for brain and bones development

PenApple · 07/01/2019 19:21

Supposed to be whole milk as they need the fat content until 2.

Jackshouse · 07/01/2019 19:22

Full fat is recommended for under 2 and then semi - skimmed milk can be given to older children.

RogueV · 07/01/2019 19:22

Why not use full fat milk?

Pissedoffdotcom · 07/01/2019 19:23

DD had semi-skimmed as full fat made her really constipated. HV said it wasn't too much of a concern her having semi-skimmed

NHS guidelines is to give whole milk til 2: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/solid-foods-weaning/#what-foods-to-give-your-baby

Never gave my ds whole milk. I know the guidelines say whole milk up to 2 but I chose to give semi skimmed as that's what we had and not long after skimmed as we changed to this milk. My ds was and still is healthy with no health concerns so I was happy to do that. He's nearly 6 now, the tallest in the class not a day off school yet from illness (touch wood!)

Sorry for giving seemingly bad advice OP! Looks like full fat is best for baby.

Kokeshi123 · 15/01/2019 12:49

They are getting such tiny amounts at 7mo that it hardly matters.

rubyroot · 16/01/2019 22:03

Full fat milk as it is more nutritious and has more calories and calcium

Sleeplikeasloth · 17/01/2019 20:54

Full fat in bottles etc and where possible in cooking, but I've lost no sleep over the very occasional bottle of semi if we've otherwise run out, or in cooking.

Kokeshi123 · 18/01/2019 13:56

Full fat in bottles etc

Do you mean in baby bottles, for a baby? The OP's child is less than 7mo. The milk that babies under 12mo are served in bottles is supposed to be either expressed breastmilk or infant formula--you can't give a young baby bottles of regular cow's milk as a mainstay.

Sleeplikeasloth · 18/01/2019 17:30

No, I mean for over a year old.
