DS is coming up for 7 months and we're traditional weaning as he HATED blw (which was my preference as it just seemed easier !). He loves his food, eats loads! So much he seems to be dropping milk feeds. Should i be letting him eat that much or holding him off so he eats more milk?

When you say he’s dropping feeds, are you’ve BFing or Ffing? How many times a day are you offering solids? Smile

I would offer milk first as primary nutrition and anything eaten after that is fine

My dd did this, she seemed to prefer food to milk from the get go. She was mix fed, so had 1 bottle of f a day and was bf the rest of the time and we did mushed up food and finger food (no purees)from 6 months. It worried me at the time but the hv said to give calcium rich foods. By 11 months she was down to just her bedtime bottle. I would just keep offering milk and add lots of cheese sauces, yogurts etc into his diet.

2 children in my wider family did this, basically weaned themselves. It’s probably against all the advice but they quickly picked up eating at meal times and by a year started to choose food over milk when offered both. They both grew up fine, the mother of 2 had a whole blw plan worked out so was quite disappointed.

Hes FF and i thought with purees you offer food first?? He loves cheese so easy to offer cheesy things! I think hes down a bottle on before and we are offering solids 3 times a day spaced between bottles. He's waking hungry at night still so having milk then of course

Personally I’d drop one of the meals, possibly lunch as the NHS Guidelines say to move to 3 meals a day between 8 and 9 months. The current advice is to offer all babies milk before food until they’re one too Smile

Something like this might work.

7am bottle
8am breakfast
11am bottle
2pm bottle
4 pm small bottle
5pm dinner
7pm bottle

Make sure you give him a multivitamin each day if he’s havibg less than 20floz of formula.

If he’s having less formula than he needs, you need to replace the fat as well as the calcium and vitamins. Things like adding olive oil to food and making sure he eats oily fish at least twice a week should help Smile

He's still having 5-6 8oz bottles (doesn't fully finish them, has 6-7 oz a time ususlly) so maybe hes ok after all. The little piglet is still a skinny thing after all that somehow!!!

Have you read this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust? Honestly, I think if he’s having that much formula, it’s fine to drop some Smile

I have now, thank you!!
