What age did you first introduced drinking chocolate to your child. Not as a every day thing but as a special treat my little one is 8 and a half month old just curious as to when he can have his first little try ?

Probably not before 2-3. It’s quite sugary. I wasn’t in any hurry with the sugary treats.

MummySharkBabyShark · 28/12/2018 05:08

I think it contains caffeine. I wouldn’t give it to a child for that reason and the sugar.

Eldest was over 3. Youngest gets the odd one now and again if his brother is having it, he's just 2. I defiantly would avoid giving anything like just now.

Do you mean hot chocolate, chocolate nesquick type stuff or friji pre made stuff?

Hot chocolate - age 3 (perhaps once a month but maybe less regularly than that)
Chocolate nesquick - age 5 but only as a very occasional treat (for the reason that I didn't want it being preferred over normal milk)
Friji - never, my sister had one as a child and left it in the fridge and after a couple of days it had gone quite solidified and had separated with a layer of oil on the top. Never will that be passing my child's lips.

DD has just started having bambinochino when we're in a cafe. Sometimes they're just frothy milk with chocolate sprinkled on top but a couple have been hot chocolate with frothy milk on top with sprinkle. She's coming up to 3 and feels very grown up. She drinks plain milk from the fridge in the house and is fine with that.

2ish

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 28/12/2018 11:01

My DS is 2 and he has one occasionally as a treat!

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/12/2018 11:02

Never. It's not something I would offer. My eldest has had a ready made bottle of chocolate milk at a party, and that's the only time I can think of. I wouldn't give sweetened drinks to a young baby at all.

concernedforthefuture · 28/12/2018 19:15

Sugary drinks aren't really appropriate for children under 2.
At 2-3, I'd give hot chocolate made with 1/4 of the recommended powder in a small cup of warm milk (so basically warm milk with a hint on chocolate).
Cold pre-made chocolate milks / Frijj drinks are dreadful (sugar content) and have no place in a child's diet IMO. If you must, for over 2s use Nesquik powder in a much weaker concentration than the packet advises. Or better still, make a banana milkshake with a glass of milk and 1/2 a very ripe banana.

DD had a lukewarm weak hot chocolate with a few mini marshmallows on Christmas eve. First time she has had it and she's 3. She most likely won't have it again until next Christmas eve, it's not really something I'd think to give her generally.

Nquartz · 28/12/2018 19:26

hot chocolate probably 5, chocolate milk 6 but she didn't like it (result)

CherryPavlova · 28/12/2018 19:31

Not before 5years and then only as an after ski/sledging or swim treat.
