We had a very slow start to weaning. I think some of it was down to ds's reflux, the rest I do not know.

We were advised to start at 4 months because of the reflux however he wasnt bothered about it so I stopped totally not wanting to force the issue.
We tried again at 5 months and 6 and then started to get going when he was about 7 months.

He will not be spoon fed at all. He might have 2 mouthfuls, realise whats happening and then we get the mouth clamped and head back scenario plus lots of tears.
I intended to BLW which we have done to a degree but he wont eat the food at all.
The only thing he has managed to eat is scotch pancakes for breakfast and cow and gate biscuits
Come meal times, I give him whatever we are eating and it just gets mulched together in his hands, thrown on the floor or stared at.

I have been thinking back to when we weaned dd and by the time she was this age, she was eating 3 healthy home made meals a day and just down to 2 bottles. One in the morning and one at night.
Ds is the total opposite and is still taking 5 8oz bottles a day.

What can we do to help him or to get him to start eating more food?
The boy surely cannot live off scotch pancakes forever!

Nbg - how many 10 months olds starve themselves to death?

Make sure he has lots of fluids - but not too many before food otherwise he will be full up on liquid. Does he have lots of snacks - pieces of fruit etc

I know I know

He doesnt snack at all. He used to love banana and even that has bit the dust now.

I just think that he wont ever eat at this rate.
He doesnt even show an interest.

ow, that sounds a bit of a pain in the arse, especially compared to dd. there's a Yahoo BLW Group FAQ on my blog and they report that 'many of the babies in this group only took to eating with any real seriousness at 12 months'. presumably they've read that 'until they're one it's just for fun'?

what about cold things, in case he's teething? also, can you ditch the high chair? dd loved eating on the move from around the time she learned to cruise and i'm sure i've seen vvvqv say that she basically used to leave little bits of food on the floor for her reluctant eater.

if he's got a pincer grip, i'd aso let him play with some frozen peas for fun, and maybe give the sweet potato wedges a try (recipe on blog) because they're practically a dessert so he may be inclined to try them...

good luck, it's good that you're being relaxed about it all, that's the main thing.

Agree with Aitch - my DS (now 11 months) would just throw food on the floor if in his highchair - so I now give him his snacks/tea (usually sandwiches) on the move - put the plate on the floor/coffee table and let him help himself. He eats far more this way than he ever did before.

Have to say this is probably not for you if you like a tidy house though - we constantly find crumbs/bits of food all over the place and you have to hoover every day.

you do become a bit cunning about making sandwiched and cutting them into near enough bite-sized pieces, though, don't you?
i even chop mandarins in half because if she takes a whole segment she drips juice everywhere... thank god we've mostly got wooden flooring.

We ditched the highchair months ago because he hated it.
Hes quite happy in a booster seat with a little tray on. I'll try on the move too. Dh hates it because of the mess but we have laminate so its not that big a deal.

I did him sweet pot wedges a couple of days ago and one got sucked on (he has 8 teeth) and the rest got thrown at the dogs

He has got the pincer grip now. I have some sweetcorn in. I could try that.

what about french toast, nbg? dd loves that, especially if we're out in the buggy. actually, she does eat loads at teh park, i'd have to say. picnics are a great favourite.

Nbg · 26/06/2007 11:36

Ok, french toast added to next shopping list!

He will occasionaly lick philli off some toast
