Weaning off lactose free milk

Hi, I'm just after some advice really, my 4month old is currently on lactose free milk, has been since he was 2 1/2 months due to having tummy pains and constantly runny stools, I took it upon myself to put him on this milk because of these problems and he has been 100% better ever since. I want to try and wean him back onto normal milk to see if his tummy can now cope with it abit better but this morning my partner gave him some banana yog ( without thinking of the dairy content) 🙈 and two hours later my baby had a runny stool.... I'm
Now in two minds as to whether I should try weaning him onto normal baby milk as he might actually have a dairy intolerance!? ...

have you actually seen a doctor over all this? what milk did you change him onto was it a brand you can buy in supermarkets ie cow and gate comfort milk? my dd had a milk allergy and they recommended to not try her back on normal milk until she was 1. we then did the milk ladder (you can google) which then introduces dairy bit by bit. i think 4 months sounds very young to be trying back on normal milk.

Yes the doctor knows what's happening, I read about temporary lactose Intolerance in babies and it said about putting your baby on lactose free milk for 8 weeks then slowly weaning them back onto normal milk formula after the 8 weeks to see if their tummy was mature enough to handle it. But after the banana yogurt incident I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do. I may book an appointment with the doctor again although last time I was there they weren't very helpful, tried telling me my baby have runny poo and tummy ache was Normal!

If your GP is aware they should refer you to a Paediatric Dietician and you should only really introduce regular cow’s milk under their instruction.

What milk have you been giving, exactly?
Lactose intolerance is very rare in babies. They are much more likely to have CMPA (cow's milk protein allergy). So lactose-free milk and other products are not suitable. They have to be free from cow's milk protein. You should be giving a hypoallergenic formula (which you can get on prescription) and once baby starts solids you should avoid dairy products to begin with, and seek medical advice before introducing dairy.
4 months is a bit young to be giving yoghurt anyway.

And why was your 4 month old having yoghurt? Even if you wean early they shouldn't have dairy until 6 months.

It was baby yogurt... recommended from 4months + Hmm

We had something similar but when DD was a little older.

You really need to ask your GP to refer you to a dietian. Lactose intolerance is very very rare in babies and it is much more likely that she has CMPI, an intolerance to the protein in the milk. They will probably want to change her formula.

Children with CMPI show am improvement on a lactose free diet.

Food should not be given at 4 months unless under medical advice. It can legally be advertised as suitable from 4 months in the same way cot bumpers legally be sold but are unsafe to use.
