7 month old - what to give?

DD has been doing very well with her veg purées so far, and I would like to start trying her with some different foods, but I'm so worried about giving her something she can't have!

Is there anything she definitely can't? I know no honey is allowed, and she can't drink cows milk, but is there anything else?

Could she have scrambled egg? Toast soldiers? Everything has been blended so far so I'm a bit scared to give her proper solids Grin

Scrambled egg, toast, and many other things are absolutely fine. Has she had no finger foods at all so far?

The only things you need to be aware of are whole nuts and grapes, as choking hazards.

Foggymist · 27/11/2018 16:35

Yes she can have most things you're eating, just not honey and cow's milk as a drink like you said, she can have eggs once they're fully cooked. Toast is perfect finger food, just give her anything you're eating that you can cut into easily grabbed finger slices.

Pasta is a good one. Boots do mini shells, can mix with pesto or blended tomato and veg sauce.

Avocado/nut butter/cheese on toast

Sweet potato wedges

@AssassinatedBeauty nope no finger foods at all! Only baby porridge and veg purées, I'm determined for that to change and to widen her menu now I know what I should be able to give her though.

Some really good ideas there, thank you all Smile I feel a little more confident today.

At that age I used to make veggie curry based on coconut milk with spices but not chilli. I'd cut the veggies into chip shapes - carrots, peppers, courgettes and also use mange tout, baby sweetcorn and I got a chilli grinder so my own had a bit extra heat.
DD loved scrambled eggs and beans and I'd cut crusty bread like sourdough or ciabatta to dip in because she would just ram toast soldiers in and spit out a ball.
She also loved cheesy pasta with veggies cut into chip shapes and normal milk and mild cheese like edam to start with.

I started her on rice by making risotto - there are lots of squash in the shops around now which is a nice one to start with.
I found that she got a nappy rash after eating tomatoes so when I made bolognese I would use lentils, courgettes, red peppers and carrots to dilute the tomato a bit.
For pasta dishes she started with spaghetti and moved onto fusili now that she eats with a fork.
I make pizza using natural yoghurt and flour for the dough and blend up roasted carrots, red pepper, onion, garlic and courgette for the sauce. I make a lot of that and freeze it in pots. Pizza is good if it's not deep pan because it's less messy and thin crust cools down quicker.

I forgot about peppers! Ds loves them! I cook a Mexican rice and mince dish (smoked paprika and garlic to flavour the mince - kind of like taco mince) and he picks the peppers out to eat first!

Mine loves omelette cut into strips. You could chuck in finely sliced veg, grated cheese - try different things :)

anniehm · 28/11/2018 07:09

Pretty much anything, however introduce foods gradually so you can monitor for adverse reactions. My 7 months my kids ate chopped up family meals with the meat shredded rather than puréed

Should add babies like flavoured foods - dd1 was fussy but we discovered she liked strong flavours like Indian foods and chilli (as the owner of our favourite Mexican restaurant said at the time when he appeared with a special bowl of food for her, it's what Mexican kids eat!)

SnuggyBuggy · 28/11/2018 07:16

I do toast fingers with mine. I think you also can't give raw shellfish, I doubt that's many people's first choice. I usually give a veg purée and a small piece of any appropriate food we are having like a slice of peeled cucumber or baby carrot.

Ah thank you all so much for taking the time to reply! I'm looking forward to trying her with some new things over the next few days Smile not as scared now!

OP just to clarify, babies can't drink cows milk at this age but it's fine to cook with it :-)
