Help major weaning issues

Weve been weaning our 6.5 month old and she's having issues.
The premade fruit pots she can eat fine, she'll pretty much inhale a full one. But anything else at all that we give her she really gags on. It's not a texture thing because I've tried various textures and she's the same. The health visitor said she just might not be ready for weaning and to leave her off food for a few weeks then start again from the beginning. But if that was the case surely she wouldn't be able to eat the fruit pots so well? Also what if she's still like this in month? Can not weaning till later cause issues? And what if all I can get her to eat for ages is the fruit pots? Ds1 was eating loads at this age, I'm out of my depth here

Have you tried any finger foods?

Aftereights91 · 16/11/2018 18:21

I tried her with rusk to see if it was a spoon feeding issue she had or not and she gagged on that too

I agree with health visitor. For a 6.5mo, four weeks is a long time. Don’t forget her main source of nutrition is still milk.

Give up with the purées altogether, unless she bawls for a fruit pot. Just put food you eat in front of her and let her gnaw at it. She’ll develop her sense of taste and texture. In four weeks, try spoon feeding her again, although I suspect she will have figured out how to gum at toast and apple slices, chew on a bone, suck the water out of cucumber or pear slices, chomp on a slice of cheese, drink up yogurt etc.

She will get there in the end. They all do. Ever seen a 3yo (with no other issues) only eating fruit pots and milk?

Oh, and my second child gagged on food until he was around 2.5yo. He was chewing too fast, didn’t chew properly, it’d get stuck in his throat and he’d puke. He’s soooooo over that now Hmm

Oh thank you that's so reassuring :) I have a tendency to be a little panicky with food intake because my first lost lots of weight when he was first born due to not feeding properly so I tend to worry with food, not that the kids know that haha. There's definitely no worries about nutrition intake with regards to milk, she feeds a lot. I'll try her again in a few weeks then unless she grabs anything in the meantime. She was trying to steal DHs crisps the other day

Don’t worry. Grabbing DH’s crisps means she’s interested and willing, so it’ll come when she’s good and ready. Some babies just don’t like purées. Many adults don’t like smooth soups. As long as she’s eating enough nutritious food, she’ll be just fine Smile

My second wouldn’t do purees but would eat finger foods. Could you try her with some banana? Bananas split naturally from the top and once split, they’re easier for little hands to hold Smile

Ok so solid foods are also a no go :( she's nearly seven months surely she should be able to eat without gagging like thid
