How much milk for ten month old?

Hi everyone, I'm feeling a bit confused. A few weeks ago I started to switch to more formally mixed feeding my ten month old. Before then she had had the odd bottle as and when but was mainly breastfed on demand.

I'm now mixed feeding as I'm going away for work more and don't want to get mastitis again, so current schedule is:

wake up (any time between 6-8 am) breastfeed, then breakfast (which is often porridge made with 3 oz formula)

10:30 4-7ox formula bottle (depending on how much she drinks - I make 7oz) followed by morning snack (usually fruit, sometimes breadstick)
1pm lunch (e.g. 1/2 pita with houmous, fruit/yogurt, small amount of soup)

4pm sometimes afternoon snack at if her nap hasn't gone on too late,

5pm breastfeed

6 pm dinner (whatever we are having and she generally eats a good amount)

7pm bedtime with a short breastfeed to settle.

I'm concerned about the amount of milk she's getting - is it enough? Do I need to get another bottle in there during the afternoon? It seems almost impossible to fit one in around meals, snacks and naps. Childminder used to get two 7oz bottles into her a day (she goes 1 day per week) but she seems to want those less now. Any help appreciated!

Up to 1 year 20oz is recommended - milk in cereal/ foods and dairy products count towards this too. From 1 year the amount drops to 300mls and again it doesn't all have to be in drink form

The 20 floz is only for babies that are not BF. I’d say that baby is getting enough. I would probably swap the formula in the porridge for cow’s milk though. There’s no need to use the formula in food and the Cow’s Milk is easier.

If you’re worried at all, just give one of the Bfing HelplInes a call and speak to a fully qualified BFCs a call. Have you got the Bfing Helpline Numbers?

For some ideas on things to offer her along with the BFs and formula, have a look at page 77 and onwards in this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust Smile

Forgot to say. It used to be 20 floz a day between 6 and 12 months. I believe this has now changed. A baby who didn’t have any BFs at all should be getting 400 ml (13.5 floz) of formula a day between 10 and 12 months plus a daily vitamin supplement.

This changes to 300 ml (10 floz) of full fat cow’s milk per day between 12 and 24 months.

As she’s having roughly 300 ml (10 floz) of formula already, plus BFs. I really wouldn’t worry Smile

Thank you so much for the advice, this is really helpful. I've been so stressed trying to get milk into her plus food, today she has drunk a grand total of 6oz formula (refused any more completely) plus two breastfeeds, but she has eaten loads and had two pots of formal frais. I will stop worrying so much, she's hardly wasting away! Three weeks off from 12 months, looking forwards to not worrying so much about the milk thing!

2 BFs plus 6 floz of formula is plenty Smile
