I am completely blank. I spend most of the days out and about with DD and I am at a complete loss as to how I can manage a lunch time BLW 'sesh' - in terms of the mess and ideas of what to offer her. I'm usually in a cafe at lunch time where there's very little extra space and she would be on my lap. Please help!

steamed carrot, celery, cucumber, halved grapes, bread, ricecakes, peach, apricot, not banana it's too messy... lots of chickpea burger type recipes on the blog. also breaded chicken pieces if you can keep them cool, cold sweet potato chips, jersey royals, sandwiches... i think most food is fine on the move, it's just 'clean food' you're looking for.
tbh it doesn't matter, she'll just want whatever you're having anyway.

what temperature?? I'm not sure I'd like to eat steamed carrots at fridge temperature myself but in this weather, things would have to be in a bag with an ice pack thingy I presume?

Do I just accept that most of it will end up on the cafe floor and my thighs??

i never bothered with ice packs at all, and dd liked cold carrot, it felt nice on her gums. you can do some and leave them in the fridge.
of course it'll go on the floor... actually if she's sitting on your knee and you're holding onto it (we did this in tight places, dd used to grab my hand and pull it towards her) the mess might not be so bad.

Thanks Aitch - it's so frustrating - she was desperate to dive in to my lasagne and salad at lunch time today but I didn't dare let her because I had no idea how much salt was in it. Is humous ok do you think??

well look, as far as i was concerned i was disinclined to be overly fussed over the salt issue because they are allowed some. so i always figured that if she was eating everything else fresh and home-cooked then she could stand to have a little lasagne.

and the salad shouldn't have been a problem, especially if you had the foresight to ask for the dressing separately.

but it's up to you what you do. cheese and bread can be quite salty but i used to just keep an eye on things and it was fine. tbh, my great grandma used to add a bit of salt to everything her baby (my grandma) ate because she'd been told that it stimulated the tastebuds and none of us are on dialysis. so long as the rest of the food is simple and unfuckedaboutwith then i'd personally have gone ahead. i also gave her hummous a lot, sometimes home-made, sometimes shop-bought.

That's a very good point actually. Fabulous - thank you

Sorry to hijack but I am very interested in BLW but have a question! My DS is only 4.5mths so not ready yet but he has started to really watch me eat and today took a bit of my sandwich from my hand and went to put it to his mouth. He is not particularly showing signs of being ready to wean, he is feeding the same and is sleeping well through the night but if he does start to show signs before 6 months, can you still BLW or do you have to puree until they reach a certain age? Thanks!

Aitch · 19/06/2007 22:21

well, i'd personally say that the biggest sign of being ready to eat solid food is actually picking up and eating solid food, so i'd wait until that happens.
if you think it did today with the sandwich (but best not to give gluten before 6 months) then that might be a sign in itself.
all i can do is tell you what i'd do in your circumstances, really. you've got a baby who is fine with milk, so no big hurry, so i'd wait as long as i could but as the 6 month mark approaches i'd see if he made a swipe for things like carrot or fruit, and then see how he gets on. i don't really see how a few weeks makes such a difference, if you feel you can't get to 6 months, and if a chid can feed himself before 6 months then i'd trust it to know what it's doing. (within reason...)

Aitch · 19/06/2007 22:22

oh yeah, but to answer your question... i wouldn't do purees, no.

jojosmaman · 19/06/2007 22:36

Thanks for that and I am sure he will be happy with milk for a good few weeks at least (I think he was just trying to embarrass me as he did it about two mins after i'd just told my ante natal meet ups that he is not a hungry baby so I don't think he is in need of anything else except milk!).

Also, I have just read the link from your blog about guidelines for BLW and noticed comments re bottle feeding as ds is bottle fed now so I think I maybe need to read up some more on it? It says to spk to the HV but I did so a couple of weeks ago at a weaning class and to be honest I dont think she had ever heard of it as she seemed to fob me off with baby rice and pureed carrot and didnt quite get the concept! Is it that I need to be careful due to over feeding? Sorry to mither!

Aitch · 19/06/2007 22:38

can you have a look at the Breast and Bottle feeding section? you'll find a long and plaintive explanation of my poxy bfing record and an interesting note from Gill Rapley on the subject.

Aitch · 19/06/2007 22:38

the section on the blog, that is...

jojosmaman · 19/06/2007 22:39

Will do! Thanks again!
