Mash potato for 5 month old??

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 14:26

Could I mash a potato with ds's formula in to a smooth puree?

It’s up to you as to when you feel he is ready (I’m assuming he is already having some solids by the potato query) I’m aware guidelines will suggest not due to the 6 months start for weaning-I’m not preaching here I promise my son was 4 1/2 months and going nuts for food so we just let him start having what we have there and then 😳 thinking he wouldn’t manage it but no, got straight stuck in with the pasta bake and hasn’t looked back since. he’s now 10 months and still found nothing he won’t eat so hopefully no damage done. I’d happily have given mash at that age but others will disagree and ultimately you have to make the call-you know your baby best 😊

Santaispolishinghissleigh · 08/11/2018 14:40

Why would you want to?

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 14:41

Aw he's been munching for weeks lol such a hungry horace minute he sees his bowl and spoon his mouth is open and his tounge is stuck out haha its the cutest thing ever and since feeding him purees he's like a different wee boy. I blended carrots with his formula and he scoffed the lot but wasn't sure as potato has starch but I'll give a go and see how he gets on. Thanks Smile

Why would I want to what? Give my baby potato? Introduce him to a new texture and taste??... Oh I dunno maybe cause its called experimenting with different and new things

OP posts:
Santaispolishinghissleigh · 08/11/2018 14:43

And maybe guidelines are 6 months for good reason.

petalsinthegarden · 08/11/2018 14:46

OP, if you're looking at making potato into a purée then it won't really work. Something to do with the starch, not entirely sure.

I used to give sweet potato as a purée to my DD when she was weaning and I'm doing the same with my DS now. He loves it.

Try sweet potato so it blends better.

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 14:48

My ds has been eating well before 6 months hasnt had any issues thus far, I get guidelines however those are only advice and every baby is different.

Thanks for the tip I'll try and pick up some sweet potato and give it a go Smile

Oh absolutely! Totally worth doing what you feel best. If you pop potato through a ricer and add plenty of milk can get it really smooth if that helps little one. Hope you both enjoy!

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 15:05

Thanks as pp I've made blended carrots which he scoffed every last bit and had absolutely no problems at all, I wouldn't dream of feeding early had I not thought he was ready

OP posts:
AromaticSpices · 08/11/2018 15:07

How do you know he's ready, out of interest?

dementedpixie · 08/11/2018 15:08

You can mash potato but don't try to blend it as the starches make it go gluey. If you add enough milk you should get it smooth enough

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 15:15

@Aromaticspices this isn't the first I've fed him, he's been on solids a while now and hasn't once refused or pushed food out with his tounge... Also alot of things when it comes to a baby are trial and error and had me or my partner noticed he was upset, had a sore tummy or was or wasn't going to the loo then I'd stop immediately and stick with just his formula

My 2 dd's were having mashed potatoes at 5mths. The both loved it.

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 15:26

@parkheadprincess I think it's just every baby is different, I've had this out with my HV and child smile n they said I've started so no point stopping and upsetting a happy baby

OP posts:
Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 15:27

Oops meant @parkheadParadise my bad lol

Fieau · 08/11/2018 15:31

For the PP who asked: Signs of readiness are baby sitting up, hand eye coordination to lift the food to their mouth, and having lost their tongue reflex (so they don't just push it back out again)

Recommendation is to wait until six months due to an immature gut I think.

In response to the OP, my little boy has loved mashed sweet potato but didn't get on with normal mashed potato at all - it's quite claggy? He didn't like the texture at all. If you roast a sweet potato in the oven it's basically already mash by the time it's cooked Grin

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 15:42

He's doing all those you've mentioned @Fieau and after I've fed him I give him his spoon with a teeny bit left on it and it's straight into his mouth so he defo knows what he's doing.
Ahain thanks for the tip I'll pick up some sweet potato tomorrow Smile

I did mash with formula but my DS wasn't to interested. He liked carrot purée, betternut squash purée, sweet potato as some pps have mentioned and turnip purée
I can't remember exactly when we started but I think he was about the same age as your little one.

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 15:56

Did any other pp's feed their 5 month old? N if so what and how many times a day... Routine etc

planechocolate · 08/11/2018 15:59

Geez. Humans have been weaning infants for millennia. 20 odd years ago when I was weaning mine, it was recommended that you start at 4 months. In 20 years' time, they will come up with something else.

If I were you OP, I'd make my own decision based on whether I thought he was ready.

gemsparkle84 · 08/11/2018 16:00

First fed my little girl at 5 months. I knew she was ready because she was staring at and reaching our food to grab and put in her own mouth. Came from nowhere tbh but once she did it I let her hold a banana and she mushed it up and ate a few mouthfuls. I would have waited until she was a year old if I had waited to give her solids til after she got a tooth as she didn't get her first tooth until her first birthday. All babies are different and mashed potato is an excellent first food!

cc4490 · 08/11/2018 16:01

Started with tea time usually around 5ish then we introduced breakfast a couple of weeks later (baby porridge) and then a couple of weeks after that lunch which was usually a different purée to what he was having at tea time.
I didn't drop any feeds or anything like that so he was taking the same amount of milk. I just let him eat if he wanted to. Some days he ate like he was starving and other days he wasn't interested.
I bought tiny Tupperware from the pound shop to make little individual portions and froze them to stop any waste.

Cunnyfunt18 · 08/11/2018 16:01

@planeChocolate my point exactly lol when I was kid my dad said I was eating from about 3/4 months and never did me any harm
