If you really believe that mothers routinely chew up food for babies then you are deluded.

Birds do that not mammals.

It really does happen in non-Western countries. Where they don't have jars and blenders!

God did I do my children some great disservice by mashing up carrots in the early days?! Yikes! That must be the reason for all their, er, problems?!

Blimey, get a life.

To nobody in particular - just the issue in general

Personally I don't understand the hysterics about jar food. If you look at Hipp Organic jars for example, I can't see any ingredients in there that I'm not happy to give to my baby. And yes, I have been known to buy them on occasion, so bl*dy what.

Baby food jars seem on a par with fruit shoots around here these days...

I see a danger with BLW in that some mums might think they can give their baby just any old crap. Like a mum I know who gave her eight month old chicken nuggets, chips, washed down with fruit shoot, and regularly gives her now one year old chocolate bars, sweets...

that can't be right either can it?

i know the cow+gate jars are full of crap, but the hipp ones i used to give dd2 had ingredients like 'carrot, water' listed

It happens in non-western countries does it? Have you seen this? Or would you just like to believe it?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 20/06/2007 09:09

joreange5 - I don't understand why you're being so argumentative. I know this isn't addressed to me but I gave the example below of my sister's 70 year old nanny doing this for her - that was 40 years ago, in an Eastern European country. I have no idea if the practice was widespread then (I didn't get it, I was a different baby regarding food) or now in my own or other countries. There's probably some research on this by anthropologists or sociologists for those who have the time to look it up. Or maybe you know more?

Seems common sense to me that mothers would pre-chew food for their babies. I have done it with meat myself - what's the big deal? Or are we so sanitised in the West, that we can't contemplate the idea
