we are weaning our 7 mo DS and am keen to get him off the bottle and on to a cup asap as have heard bottles are not good for the teeth. Have heard that cups with valves are also not good for teeth. Have tried the doidy cup but he seems to want to dip his hand in and play with the contents. only has a couple of sips. Then got a Tommee Tippee Easyflow beaker thing, that does not require sucking. Only he doesnt get it. Doesnt seem to realise he has to bite it and he just gets frustrated & cries. Now have a tommee tippee first cup, but am not sure if this has a valve or not. So not keen to use it if no valve. How do I get the lad to take water? Doesnt seem interested in it. Oh, and the weaning routine - all I seem to do is feed him or give him bottles. Is this normal: breastfeed on waking (around 7), breakfast around 8, milk approx 125ml at 10.30 / 11 ish, lunch at 12.30 ish, more milk at 3, tea at 4.30 or 5, more milk before bed at 6.45 or 7pm....should he have milk with his food??? Am keen to make sure he gets at least 500ml per day. please help as we have NO idea what we are doing!!!!

the first cup doesnt have a valve - it is a free flowing cup - my ds has been able to use his since he was around 6 months. I only offer water in it at meal times as I am not planning to swap to beakers for milk until he is over 1 year (when milk becomes less important) There is no real rush to move to beakers just yet - it is recommended by 1 year although some people give the bottle for much longer.

I do the same as you and split milk and food - I rarely give them together (depends on wake up times from night sleep and naps). Re: the cup - offer it at meals and leave it on the highchair tray for your lo to touch, play with and maybe even drink out of!! They dont need much - a couple of sips is plenty as they will get the rest of their fluids from milk for some time to come.

It took my ds about 2 month before he got the hang of the tommee tippee easyflow. I gave him sips from it during meals to get him used to drinking and swallowing instead of sucking it down. All I can say is be patient he will get it at the end. It is a new skill and he needs to content with a lot of new things while getting a drink from a cup, moving it in his mouth and swallowing without gagging.

I used one in the bath as well, once he was in a bathring, gave to him to play with and mess about.

Super stuff Seona1973 & Spacepuppy, think I have been getting stressed about moving him off the bottle before he reaches 1...perhaps I should just relax and let the lad try the cups out with his meals before rushing into getting him to totally take cups instead of bottles. Its a lot for him to take in, especially as he has only just started on the solid foods as well as the cups. Cheers for the advice.
