OK, we all know the term 'BLW' is poo. Could we invite Gill Rapley round to MN for a cup of tea, and very gently break it to her

... sorry, enough title, break it to her that we LOVE the idea, but it's causing confusion here, and would she mind suggesting another name?

Aitch, are you in touch with her at all? Do you think she'd be open to the idea?

Well, it seemed vaguely rude to suggest taking her idea and making up a new name for it.

Why don't we just call it "Fred". Short, easy to spell and does not make value judgements about weaning spoons.

Aitch · 16/06/2007 00:28

fredledweaning?

welliemum · 16/06/2007 00:28

I'd love to chat to Gill Rapley actually, would be interested to hear what she has to say.

(Damn, wish I'd thought of bagpipecarrier)

OP posts:
euphoniumhumper · 16/06/2007 00:29

how's this?

WriggleJiggle · 16/06/2007 00:30

Oy! Keep Fred out of this.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/06/2007 00:30

I think there was a thread once where all manner of instruments were "carried", so bagpipes, pianos, violins, etc are all taken.

She is very lovely apparently, and quite partial to a biscuit or two. I dont think she'd be as egotistical to take 'baby led weaning' as her own idea.

welliemum · 16/06/2007 00:32

Well, I think we should get in some hobnobs and invite her round - it could be really interesting.

OP posts:
RainbowWalker · 16/06/2007 00:34

In this day and age FRED would probably have to be an acronym for something too (Formula Retching Easily Digested perhaps??)

Aitch · 16/06/2007 00:35

i think she'd be horrified at some of the threads on here, tbh. i'd be very wary of asking her to come on... you all know how it would go...
'but the blwers say spoons are evil'
GR :'well i've never said any such thing'
'well, they do. i've seen them'
blwers:'er, no we don't. as we've told you fifty million times before'.
etc etc etc
i'd be concerned she'd be walking into a chicken shoot.

welliemum · 16/06/2007 00:36

aitch.

You're probably right.

OP posts:
Aitch · 16/06/2007 00:40

this is excellent, i think. www.iwantmymum.com/content/view/68/53/

welliemum · 16/06/2007 00:45

She does sound lovely.

OP posts:
Aitch · 16/06/2007 00:46

and eminently sensible and uncontroversial, i think.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/06/2007 01:17

Absolutely aitch.

I think folk would already have an opinion in their head about what they think she is like, based on some misinterpretations about BLW generally and it would be like walking into an ambush.

ruddynorah · 16/06/2007 12:17

she also did a good chat on i think radio 4 with good old annabel karmel. there is plenty stuff to go at if you want to understand where she's coming from.

cupcakes · 16/06/2007 12:33

tangent here:

I saw my health visitor yesterday and during our chat I said I was wanting to blw dd2. She was fully in favour of it and told me not to bother with purees but wait a bit longer (dd2 is 6 months old) until she could sit up and hold her food in her hands better. And she reiterated that she was getting very little nutrition from whatever solids she might be getting and that I could just continue bf and do whatever made us all happy.

Aitch · 16/06/2007 13:17

what a cool HV you have, cupcakes... you're lucky.
and the chat on R4 and all the other links have been on the blog for aaaages, so i totally agree with ruddynorah that you don't have to look very far to get a good idea of what GR is saying.

welliemum · 16/06/2007 23:38

I am feeling cross because I think VVVQV and Aitch are right and that we couldn't safely invite Gil Rapley here to chat.

Slightly at a tangent, but does anyone know whether there is a journal/magazine/comic read by all HVs? Perhaps something beamed at them from Planet HV on a regular basis?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/06/2007 00:02

If there was, I suspect some Other Parenting Gurus feature heavily in it.....

welliemum · 17/06/2007 00:15

Oh dear, I'm sure you're right (again).

I was wondering if there was such a publication, whether Aitch could write an article for it.

OP posts:
Aitch · 17/06/2007 00:20

newgen, the nct mag, had BLW on the cover last month. not a perfect piece, but not bad. i've a few hvs who contact me via the blog, i'll ask them. it's a good idea. a lot more hvs are learning about blw i think, some local authorities are really behind it.

Aitch · 17/06/2007 00:23

the hvs in my doctors surgery, however, remain resolute in their determination to learn nothing about blw. it's hilarious. they have commented on how marvellous an infant dd is, and how well she eats (carrot and cucumber sticks in the waiting room) and i said 'rememeber i told you about blw?' and they said 'oh yes, that funny thing you were going to do. '

welliemum · 17/06/2007 00:27

Hey, that's great!

I was just thinking that if health professionals hear about something from a trusted source, they'll pay more attention.

OP posts:
welliemum · 17/06/2007 00:28

oops, crossposted.

Pocket of resistance there I see.

OP posts:
Aitch · 17/06/2007 00:29

the article's not online but here's the cover
