lumps causing vomiting

6.5month dd has been fine with purees for a few weeks and I want to introduce some slightly lumpier and finger foods. On the two occasions I have tried (one with mashed avocado, one with an Organix rusk) she has gagged then vomited the entire contents of her stomach not pleasant although it didn't seem to bother her.

Is this a sign that she isn't ready for lumps (and what happens to change this/how long do I wait before trying again?) or do I just keep trying until she eventually stops gagging?

maybe you could try slightly less pureed foods than she usually enjoys. when ds was weaning, i very gradually reduced the "pureed-ness" of his food. i gave him his favourites to begin with and worked up from there.

My Ds was exactly the same with lumps - he used to projectile vomit when I was feeding him.

He was like this upto about 2 months ago (he is now 11 months old) and he just stopped one day and now handles all foods with no problems at all.

No advice as we just perservered (and had a bowl handy to catch the vomit in ) and he did grow out of it.

The vomitting actually means that she's dealing with the lump rather than choking on them, so it's a good sign really!

Interestingly, my DS also vommed after trying to eat an Organix rusk. Whole contents just like yours.

If she's finding it hard, stick to the purees a bit longer, or mash the avocado for a bit longer. DS is 9 months now, and only just really being able to cope with lumps. He's trying to eat sticks of carrot now, if he can get them to his mouth without them shooting out of his hand across the room and hitting the wall, that is... !

Try again in a couple of weeks, and then like nicky says, make it gradually less pureed and more mashed and lumpy.

9 months seems to be the magic milestone then CeeBee...

Ceebee74 · 13/06/2007 19:57

It would appear so...Little, just keep perservering and she will get there (you don't know many 15 year olds that still puree their food do you??)

LittleMissLate · 13/06/2007 20:04

thanks for the reassurance - looks like we stick with purees for a bit and hopefully things will improve... shame as she is very good at picking things up off the table and putting them in her mouth .

My just turned 7 month DD did the same thing for the first 3 times we gave her lumpier food or finger at 6.5months, then she stopped - she will eat bread, pitta bread, rusks, rice cakes and actually doesn't like very pureed foods and I end up putting the puree on the bread as she often rejects the spoon. Keep going, my DD is also very good with her hands and so finger food is the way to go.

Littlemisslate, keep putting the bits of food on the table as well. Gradually she'll be more interested in that and you'll look back at a meal and think, oh she ate most of that all by herself with her fingers. Then you'll get the dustpan and brush, and then mop out, and then you'll have to put her in the bath to get potato out of her hair, and you'll think, I wish it was purees still....

Babys are ready for lumpy food at 8 months.

AitchTwoOh · 30/09/2007 15:55

what's she like with finger food? you might find she responds less to lumps tht she's put in her mouth herself.

AitchTwoOh · 30/09/2007 15:56

and LOL willowsmum, i don't think everyone's baby is exactly the same on that. different gag sensitivities, for starters.

NadiaBaggyTwat · 30/09/2007 15:59

"Babies are ready for lumps at 8 months".. lol.. I don't think all babies have read that rule!

Yes stick to purees for a bit, but different consistencies of puree. Then one day, try some tiny lumps and she will manage them.. as if by magic!

My DD was exactly the same. She started managing lumps in those boxed packs of babyfood (she ate what we ate the rest of the time before anyone judges me!) but these are what got her used to lumps.. the 9 months plus packs! But she wasn't ready until she was ready ISWIM.

I was very interested to read this thread, as DD (9mths) vomited this evening as she was laid on her changing mat, just before her bath. I was so thrilled this lunchtime as she was having the same meal as us that I must've left her food slightly more lumpy than usual, and then tonight up it all came (more or less exactly as it went down, sorry if TMI) and there were some quite big lumps.
