Worried about weaning

Hi all!

DS is nearly 5 months so won't be long until we start weaning, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any books, websites etc that have any guides for weaning? Such as what foods to start with, when to increase the amount of solids he is eating? Planning to do a mix of BLW and spoon feeding to begin with and see how we go with that.
Thank you in advance Smile

Please don’t worry JustMe. The Caroline Walker Trust have produced an excellent guide called Eating Well, 1st year of life.i think this could be what you’re looking for. It gives suggestions of first foods, ideas for purees and finger foods and even sample menus Smile

Unless there are allergies (in baby or immediate family), there really are no rules other than avoiding added salt/sugar, honey and whole nuts. Beyond that, you just feed them healthy foods that you’re making for yourself and let them eat as much as they want. There’s no need to limit foods or stick to specific foods. Just focus on healthy family meals and offer what you can, when you can (warning: it’s A LOT of work! So there’s no need to rush to offering 3 meals a day. My 7 month old still mostly only has 2 meals most days).

@JiltedJohnsJulie thank you sounds like exactly what I'm looking for so il have a look!

@mindutopia nope no allergies in the family so that should make it easier (I hope) lol!

I'm a first time mum and he's always been a good eater with his bottles so I think weaning just feels a bit daunting to be honest but we will get there. Thank you both! Grin

I found this book useful: The Baby-led Weaning Cookbook www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0091935288/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_4ADQBbF7NWFSH?tag=mumsnetforum-21

I found it an anti-climax to be honest! We did BLW with spoon feeding softer stuff. Dd just sort of mushed the food around in her hands/hair/eyes for a few weeks before she took actual bites. I quickly learnt not to spend hours preparing food for her, and just gave her whatever I was having (avoiding honey, salt, whole nuts and I sliced tomatoes/blueberries/grapes etc). She’s a fabulous eater now and I do put that down to BLW. Good luck!

JustMe10 · 25/09/2018 08:48

@TeddyIsaHe yeah it does seem to make more sense to just give him what I'm having if he's just gonna play with it Grin
HV told me he would most likely do that so that's why I decided to do a bit of both then I know he's eating something when I spoon feed him.

See if your local children's centre had a first foods course, mine did which was interesting and helpful. We are do it BLW here and have just given what we have with minor adaption (such as no salt added). No issues here so far.

I started weaning DS last week. I'm using an Annabel Karmel book I bought on eBay. Can also buy an app (someone on here recommended it to me). Goes through nutrition, how to, where, when etc.
So far so good.

I love the idea of BLW but feel too nervous as a FTM.
Feeding purées and then giving finger foods also is traditional weaning.
BLW is where you never spoon feed baby or use purées.
You can't do a bit of BLW IYSWIM
