Pureed veggies vs baby rice

Hi all,

I have tried to look for previous thread but could not find anything like this. My little man is 5 month old. He shows all the signs.. wakes up at night every hr or so (way much more than he did a few weeks ago), reaches for my spoon when I eat and follows every mouth full.

Now my mum and mother in law advised to start with baby rice instead of pureed veggies..

Should I start with baby rice or pureed vegetables instead?

Thank you.

Vegetables or fruit, pureed. No salt in the veg though (until babies are about a year old).

Also, chicken/fish with vegetables.
Poached or scrambled eggs.
porridge, Ready Brek, Weetabix.
Loads of things your baby can eat.

Just give him more milk if he's hungry, its the most calorie-dense option available to a 5mo and will fill him up more than the wallpaper paste that is baby rice.

If he's genuinely ready to start eating (and he may well be), then sit him up at the table with you, on your lap or in a high chair, and let him steal food from your plate. Let him feel the textures of different foods, handle it, stick his fingers in it. Some might make it to his mouth. Most won't. It doesn't matter at this age, its all just playing.

Baby rice has no value and they don't recommend it any more. I found the book 'Baby Food Matters' very useful when planning my weaning.

Basically we're doing vegetables first, mainly bitter ones like broccoli, kale, cauliflower (not sweet ones like carrot). A mixture of finger food and purees. Repeat flavours even if they don't like them initially. Stay away from store bought baby food. Boiled water in a doidy cup after meals to protect teeth.

Thank you everyone. We will stick to pureed veggies then. Will get some from local farm grown organically xx

Would you advise to give a few teaspoons for lunch or dinner? X
