Best beaker for a bf baby?

DS is 11.5 months, still bf, and drinks water from a doidy cup at meals. I would love to just skip the beaker stage and only use a cup, but when we are out and about the doidy cup is a bit messy. Can anyone suggest a good beaker? I have heard that extended use of a beaker is bad for teeth as well as speech development, and so I'm wondering if there is any kind that is better than others for this? Thanks.

tommee tippee basic model
all others I have tried leak!

my dd is 10.5 months, still bf, uses doidy at home but we use an Anyway up Cup when we go out as it doesn't leak and has a cap for the spout. Bought it in Superdrug. I have heard about the extended beaker thing but I'm not too worried - I think bottles are worse, and 10 or 11 months is hardly extended use!!! So I wouldn't worry too much about that, especially if your ds is using a doidy and will only be using a beaker some of the time.

Thanks for your suggestions. As he will only be drinking water (not milk or juice) from the cup, I probably don't need to worry so much about the teeth.

Tommee Tippee First Cup is fab, and vv cheap

After some extensive shopping the best cups I've found are actually v v cheap! I use a doidy cup at home but when we are out and about I use a little sipper cup from wilkinson's. They are semi disposible (but can reuse) and are about £1.50 for a pack of three. They need a bit of DIY though, you need to make another hole in the lid opposite the spout (think can of evaporated milk...) They don't have handles which is a bit annoying though.

The advice I was given by the local child health department was that if you are using a 'sippy' type cup it should have a short spout with at least three holes. The liquid should flow freely (rather than having to be sucked). As well as tooth decay I think there is a concern about speech development. Its amazing how hard it seems to be to find cups matching that description though!!

Oh and the sainsbury's own brand cup was quite good too (need to remove the plastic valve thingy), although the spout is a bit long.

Hope that's helpful, sorry its so long

Sorry about repeating the speech development point - clearly didn't read the OP properly (not having a very good day so far - porridge incident and dropped beaker of milk...)

gillhowe- Thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering about. I would just like to give DS something to drink out of that is a little bit easier when we are out and about, without harming his teeth or speech development!

my 3 year old is still getting use out of her tommee tippee first cup (without the lid) and ds has mastered his first cup as well (has been able to use it with the lid on since 6 months)

I love the Heinz tiny basic cup

despite being able to use anyway up cups since she was 10 months ( super sucker), dd3 still loves this little cup (she is 13 months old and hs to have it in the cot with her, despite being empty )

FrayedKnot · 01/06/2007 19:46

Can some-one tell me what a doidy cup is?

Seona1973 · 01/06/2007 20:05

they are slanted cups that make them easier to drink from as they dont have to tip them so much.

Doidy cup
