How much food for a 6 month old?

Help! I'm starting to wean my LO. She has eaten a couple of teaspoons of baby rice, which was fine; then I gave her carrot, which she loved and ate the whole bowl. She was grouchy the next day and I wonder if I gave her too much! Is there a proper portion size or do you give as much as baby will eat? Can't find any advice on this! Thanks!

My DD is 6 months old too.
I started her on solids at the start of this month.
I too feel like I'm kind of wandering in the dark when it comes to weaning and am not sure how much to give her.
I generally give her as much as she wants to eat, up to 3 or 4 teaspoons.
It really depends on what mood she's in and whether or not it's something she really likes.
I'm not really sure that being grouchy would be caused by too much carrot, but their insides are just getting used to the idea of real food, aren't they.
I guess the question has to be, how big was the bowl?!!

It was more than 3 teaspoons - more like the size of a bought jar of baby food. Might have been a bit of a shock to her tiny belly! It's all a bit of a mystery, isn't it. Good luck with yours!

i did blw so dd only ate what she could pick up herself. so at 6 months it wasn't masses. they need milk more than food at this stage.

As much as the baby will eat - without force-feeding!

At six months, many babies (not all) will eat phenomenal amounts of food. Mine ate more at 6/7 months than he probably does now at 2.6.

Just keep introducing new things in small but regular portions. If she want more, she'll let you know.

I don't think that the grouchiness and the food are necessarily linked.

Good luck! It's all a bit of a mystery, but we all get there in the end.

I read about BLW and thought it sounded really interesting.
DD loves picking things up and exploring them, but I think she found it a bit frustrating in the beginning because she wasn't really sure what to do, especially when it came to chewing and swallowing.
However, when I offered her pureed foods she really enjoyed them.
Now I give her something to hold, suck, explore and eat if she can/wants.
Then when she's had enough of that and disposed of it by throwing it on the floor or losing it in her bib, I give her something prureed.
She seems to be really enjoy it but the amount that she eats depends very much on her mood and what the food is.
Loulou- I'm sure that everyone else is right and that we can't over feed them at this point.
DD and I seem to have settled into a routine with it now and I'm sure you and your DD will do too.
Good luck!

i am going to start weaning my LO but was wondering when during the day should i do it? i it better first thing in the morning or some other time?

RuthChan · 01/06/2007 00:44

I give my DD two solid meals a day: an early 'lunch' and 'supper'.
Both meals are solids to begin with and finished off with however much BF she wants.
I was advised that new foods should be introduced earlier in the day because then any bad reactions can be seen during waking hours.
Up to now she hasn't reacted badly to anything though and I sometimes introduce stuff at supper time too.

I started with suppers - a spoonful or three in the early evening (it was one or two ice-cubes-worth of mashed potato, having previously tried baby rice without much luck) and, after about a fortnight, did a few spoonfuls of baby rice as a late breakfast. After a week of that, spoke to HV who said, try him on three meals a day so we went on to that - some meals were from jars and for the first month he generally ate about half a jar per meal but I only stopped when he stopped wanting to eat (turning head away, spitting it out etc). It won't be long before your LO is eating his/her own bodyweight of everything...
