Giving soya milk as a drink for 6m old baby ?

Obviously I know that up until 1 drink are meant to be formula or breast milk.
Dc5 is allergic to cows milk. I’m breastfeeding and he has some purée once a day. He won’t for some reason drink expressed milk
If he has porridge he would have some alpro 1+ mixed in so I’m assuming if I were to give for example porridge mixed with bm instead then that 2-3 oz of soya milk he could have as a drink instead ? He will drink it from a bottle. He’s still only having the same amount each day if I do this so it’s ok isnt it ? I should know this having 5 dc bit I need reassurance

No, not as a drink. Soya isn't very good for under 1s, long-term either to be honest.

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 21:58

Even if it’s what he would have had in his porridge ? It’s 2-3 oz a day.
I’m wondering what else I could give him then as I need a break sometimes and for some reason he won’t have expressed milk in a bottle ??!!

No I wouldn't use it for a 6 month old. I'd use some sort of dairy free formula instead

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 21:59

The gp won’t prescribe anything as it’s only 1 feed a day and im struggling to see what else might actually be an option

Soya milk is very high in oestrogen, I'd be very cautious giving it to such a young baby

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 22:01

I might have to just buy some then. My others had neocate for the same issues I’ll see if I can get a tin of that

But it then? Something like this? Not cheap but if it's only one feed a day then it shouldn't break the bank.

Giving soya milk as a drink for 6m old baby ?
Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 22:03

I’m assuming the prescription rules have changed as I was able to get it before and I was breastfeeding and giving 1 feed of neocate and using it in food but now I’m told it can only be if I’m not breastfeeding. Being dairy and egg free is hard and I need a break sometimes !

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 22:03

I’ll have a look at that one thanks

Will he have expressed milk in porridge? I know expressing a bit of a hassle but you can avoid the soy/milk alternatives.

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 22:08

He would but it’s just an extra job to do as o have to pump and use immediately as any milk I keep even overnight in the fridge goes funny ?? Smells and tastes ‘off’ so it’s easier to use a different milk.
I think I’ll just need to buy a formula for him

Just saw you’ve been dairy and egg free while breastfeeding that’s huge.

Have you seen the first steps nutrition stuff on under 5s being vegan? The booklets long so I haven’t checked but it’s free and might have some good advice about soy milks or alternatives www.firststepsnutrition.org/eating-well-infants-new-mums

dementedpixie · 22/07/2018 22:11

You can scald your milk to stop the lipase action that makes it smell off quickly

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/07/2018 22:13

Can you try goats milk? Dd was intolerant to cows milk but was ok with goats milk.

bobstersmum · 22/07/2018 22:14

Your expressed milk should not go off overnight in the fridge? It will seperate though so will look strange but give it a swirl and stand in some hot water to warm, will baby not drink it like that?

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 22:19

If it’s been in the fridge even overnight and I then use it for his porridge it just smells awful and tastes off. I literally warm it a bit but even after 12 hrs it’s like this

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 22/07/2018 22:24

Did you read the link about lipase?

supercalifragilistic2 · 22/07/2018 22:26

We were strongly advised not to give ds soya formula/milk.

If your looking for a replacement to formula for his porridge etc try him on oatly. It's oat based and they do one with added calcium. Ds has been on this and loves it. You can buy it in health food shops and supermarkets. It's dairy, soya and egg free. They do another version called barista which is good on coffee.

doleritedinosaur · 22/07/2018 22:27

What about almond milk or oatly milk?

My sons are dairy free & that’s what I give them.

littledinaco · 22/07/2018 22:30

Is the bottle for when other people mind him for a bit? Could they not give him food and a cup of water to drink while you’re not there, then he’ll just ‘catch up’ on his milk with you. Babies are really good at taking more in a shorter space of time when they need to.

CantankerousCamel · 22/07/2018 22:31

Hemp milk is tasty, reasonably priced and full of good stuff

Soya is not really very nice

Also rude health almond milk is not too almondy

bobstersmum · 22/07/2018 22:41

Definitely read the link that dementedpixie posted op! It sounds like what's happening for sure.

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 22:41

Yes just read it it must be that ? It’s def not right unless I express and use straight away

OP posts:
CantankerousCamel · 22/07/2018 22:42

Yes you need to scald it before you cool/freeze it. It’s very common x
